Will Trent wrapped up season 2 in a stunning way that will change all the characters, especially Will and Angie! What's coming for them in the future?

Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for Will Trent season 2 finale

The season 2 finale had Will and Angie seemingly back together and doing well even as they investigated the murders of sex offenders. That had Angie once more musing on how she'd seen teen Crystal kill their mutual abuser, Lenny Broussard, which Angie took the fall for, claiming it was self-defense.

Amid dual narratives, the audience saw Angie discovering that Crystal was the spree killer, thinking she was ridding the world of monsters. She ran from Angie and ended up tripping, hitting her head on a rock, and dying.

Angie told the others what happened but stopped short of revealing Crystal killed Lenny. However, keeping anything from Will Trent is futile as he eventually figured out the truth. Crystal's mom also knew and was threatening to sue the entire Atlanta PD. After briefly imagining a future where he keeps it quiet and he and Angie have a great life together, Will snapped back to reality to arrest Angie for tampering with evidence and false testimony.

The final scene showed Angie heading to jail while Will had packed his bags and left town with Amanda sitting in his empty home. That was a wild turn, so what will happen to Angie in the coming season? Here's what we know!

The Will Trent showrunners tease Angie's future in season 3

Speaking to TVLine, showrunners Liz Heldens and Daniel Thomsen detailed how they always planned for Angie's coverup of Lenny's death to blow up in her face. Thomsen also added how this will challenge Angie's newfound sobriety.

"You should definitely worry. Since the pilot, when we flirted with the idea that Angie had to put a fentanyl patch on as part of the case, and whether that was going to knock her off the wagon, we've spent a lot of time [in the writers' room] debating when and if she should fall off. What we've decided is that we don't want to just use it as a cheap plot twist. We don't want to do the expected thing. We're always challenging ourselves to figure out a bigger and better and more horrific reason for her to fall off, and I would say that this finale presents a pretty big one."

Clearly, season 3 will play on Angie being put on trial and the obvious risk of being a cop in prison. It's up in the air if Angie will go to trial as the showrunners want to explore how the judicial system treats a cop differently. However, her future as a police officer is clearly being shaken and it's unknown if she can accept Amanda's offer to join the GBI. Thomsen hinted there are a lot of ways to play with it.

"We've talked about that, and we've talked about a path back. Everything is on the table now. We have to look at the ecosystem of the show. But we are big, big, big Erika Christensen fans over here. I love watching her, and personally I would follow [Angie] wherever she went."

The season 2 finale also left up in the air Ormewood's collapsing marriage and just where Will is headed to. But Angie's fate promises to be a big part of season 3, and what happens to her will shape Will Trent for a while to come.

Will Trent season 2 is streaming on Hulu.
