Ghosts will be exploring a new bed and breakfast, haunting its ancient, yet refinished halls. This time, the spirits are heading to Germany, as the franchise's production company, the BBC has partnered with its German branch, and pubcasters, ARD Mediathek and WRD. They're set to produce a six-episode season of the popular sitcom. Soon enough, European fans will sample the mischievous sightings and predicaments that the ghosts encounter daily.

The German premise is identical to the CBS adaptation and the UK original. The former stars Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar, who portray married couple Jay and Samantha Arondekar, inherit a centuries-old house, Woodstone Manor, and converting it into a bed and breakfast. However, unbeknownst to Jay and Samantha, spirits inhabit the home, unable to crossover since Woodstone has a "curse." Sam is able to see the ghosts and has the gift of communicating with them. When she does, we learn more of the ghosts' remarkable lives and histories and find out how they passed on.

The fan-favorite comedy has been renewed for a fourth season and will be on the CBS 2024-2025 TV schedule.

According to Deadline, filming is underway on the German adaptation in Cologne, and will continue throughout the summer. The city itself is known for its Gothic and Medieval architecture, the Rhine River landscape, and celebrations, so it was a no-brainer when the BBC chose the city for the Ghosts' expansion.

Writers Yves Hansel and Aylin Kockler will be responsible for the scripts, with Erik Haffner directing, and Tom Holzhauser and Anne Lindemann in charge of cinematography. The premiere of the German version of Ghosts, is planned for 2025, and per a press release, WRD's Fiction Director, Alexander Bickel hopes that fans across Germany will love the new show, as much as viewers in the US and the UK enjoy their versions.

"We are pleased to add a completely unique program color to ARD Mediathek with the German adaptation of the successful British series. Ghosts captivates with a special, warm-hearted humor and hopefully will also inspire audiences in Germany next year."

Who will star in the German version of Ghosts?

The German version of Ghosts or Geister in its language, has a roster of talent that'll breathe life into their respective characters. Like the US and the UK adaptions, the spirits will have rich and interesting backgrounds that ties into German history and its culture but they'll have to adjust to the present.

The German Ghosts cast:

  • Cristina do Rego as Emma
  • Benito Bause as Felix
  • Jan van Weyde as Urs, a Neanderthal
  • Max Giermann as the Roman Claudius
  • Antje Widdra as the Countess Adelheid
  • Meltem Kaptan as Griet the Maid
  • Sebastian Schwarz as insurance salesman Joachim
  • Sina Tkotsch as the teacher Svenni
  • Alexander Khuon as the poet Freidrich Dorn

The new production will be the first creation of BBC Studios Germany and is expected to be a success. In addition to Germany, a French version is also in the works, and if we have to take a guess, it'll be filmed in the Parisian countryside.

Until we get to see (and very likely translate) these exciting new and wunderbar iterations, you can catch up with CBS Ghosts and Ghosts UK seasons 1-3 on Paramount+.
