Grant Ellis is the absolute right choice for The Bachelor season 29
By Sabrina Reed
Grant Ellis wasn't "the one" for Jenn Tran but that doesn't mean that his person isn't out there and The Bachelor is giving him the opportunity to find her. Immediately after we learned the four suitors that would be moving on to Hometowns, it was announced that Grant had been chosen as the leading man for season 29.
Considering he's been a fan favorite during The Bachelorette season 21, the reveal doesn't come as too much of a surprise. Grant was one of the men who did actually keep "the main thing, the main thing" in his pursuit of Jenn's heart. From the beginning he was open about his desire to find a wife and start a family. He'd hoped she'd be Jenn but was genuine about his experience getting to know her when our leading lady didn't choose him for Hometowns.
It was unfortunate timing as he'd realized in episode 5 that he was falling for her. Grant had been emotional to the point of tears when it dawned on him that love had entered the picture for him and he'd admitted to feeling empty in episode 6 when those feelings clearly weren't reciprocated. Now, however, he'll be in Jenn's place on his own season of The Bachelor as he searches for a life partner among the host of women hoping to win his heart.
Grant is only the second Black Bachelor in the franchise's 22 year history. The first was Matt James, the leading man of season 25. Both the show and the fandom have publicly struggled with race and the handling of racist attacks lodged against contestants and leads. However, a consorted effort has been made to do better. There's been incremental change but even with Jenn's season there was rightful backlash when the cast was announced and Asian men weren't well represented.
Each new season of the franchise's shows, however, is a chance to step in the right direction. Choosing Grant as the Bachelor after he clearly showed he could be a leading man, was the best decision as much of Bachelor Nation does want to see him find love and being a part of the journey will likely make for good TV.
Applications for Grant's season are still being accepted. You can sign-up in the hopes of being cast on the official site for the show. The platform also allows you to nominate someone if you want to give them a shot at romance.
