Is Blue Bloods prepping not one but two spinoffs? The big casting news for Season 14B seems to hint at that!

For a show that's run 14 seasons and is one of the biggest hits on its network, it's truly amazing Blue Bloods has never gotten a spinoff. Given CBS loves its franchises like FBI and NCIS, one would think it's natural. Heck, Fire Country has only had two seasons and it's getting a spinoff.

A reason may be how Blue Bloods is always focused on the Reagans more than other characters, and it's hard to see a show working without that connection. That family bond has made the show a huge hit, even if the upcoming second half of Season 14 will be the last.

There have been rumors of a possible spinoff with Donnie Wahlberg even hinting at one, although it may not be about his character, Danny Reagan. An issue will be how introducing other characters into this world is a difficult thing as a show without the Reagans may be a harder sell for fans.

However, the news of two big guest stars coming in Season 14B is intriguing. Each actress has some major fame behind them and each of the two episodes sounds like it could be the classic "backdoor pilot" for a potential spinoff. So there's good reason to wonder if maybe Blue Bloods is using its last episode to prepare for the future.

Blue Bloods add major guest stars for final episodes

Per TV Insider, the first episode of Season 14B will feature Debi Mazar (currently on Netflix's Kaos). She'll play Queens DA Evaline Romano, a no-nonsense prosecutor who's investigating ADA Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan) for alleged misconduct concerning a jury member in an important gang trial. Reportedly, Romano doesn't have deference to the Reagans and seems set to clash with Erin.

Then, the November 1 episode introduces Mira Sorvino as Veronica Radley, the newly installed Fire Commissioner. She and Frank (Tom Selleck) have some common ground in that Veronica has also had her clashes with Mayor Peter Chase (Dylan Walsh) on how to run things. However, when Frank tries to mend things between them, Radley shows her own temper and no-nonsense attitude that could make things worse.

Both actresses are big names for the series. Mazar is a veteran of the business with scores of movies and numerous TV series such as Entourage, Younger, and too many guest star appearances to count. Sorvino is best known for her Oscar-winning turn in Mighty Aphrodite and has moved to TV with shows such as Shining Vale.

While each actress seems a good guest star, the question is if either is being prepped to star in her own spin-off.

Could we be getting Blue Bloods spinoffs?

Each of these episodes really feels like a "backdoor pilot," where a show sets up a potential spinoff. Mazar seems set for a show focusing on the Queens DA office, which wouldn't be as glamorous as Manhattan. Romano is a role perfect for Mazar with a character that has sass, attitude, and does not back down from anyone. It's easy to see a series focusing on Romano running things with a supporting cast of other attorneys to keep up the crime drama with some character work.

As for Radley, the idea of a Bloods counterpart set in the fire department is a no-brainer. Maybe the Radleys are the NYFD version of the Reagans, a family of firefighters and Veronica following the tradition. Sorvino has proven her talent for the role, and there's obvious drama that some in the NYFD may not be happy that a woman is in charge of the place. New York offers more than enough material for a fire/rescue series and could be a good counterpart for Chicago Fire. Sorvino would be a great lead for the show with her name value and easily anchor the series.

This is speculation for now, as it's possible these are simply meant for "one and done" guest spots. Yet the casting of two big names (especially Sorvino) and giving them a spotlight in these episodes might be the producers testing the waters with fans on if they'd be interested in either (or dare we hope, both) characters getting their own show.

So, as Blue Bloods prepares for the end, fans may be getting a peek at the future of the franchise after all.

Blue Bloods Season 14B premieres Friday October 18 at 10/9c on CBS.
