Get the early scoop on FBI season 7
By Sabrina Reed
FBI season 6 is set to conclude with "Ring of Fire," an episode that will bring the season opener full circle as the team goes up against the Somalian terrorist group led by Hakeem, the man responsible for Agent Hobbs' death. Of course, this does mean that Tiffany Wallace will have premium focus as she's the member of the team who has struggled the most with Hobbs' passing.
We'll up date this article once we know how things will shakeout in this showdown but there is news to share about the show's future on CBS. Don't worry, it's good news. Below you'll find everything we know so far about season 7 and the flagship's place on the network's roster!
FBI has been renewed through 2028
When CBS handed down renewals for the FBI franchise, the lead series didn't just get renewed for a seventh season. The team got the green light to move forward with seasons 8 and 9 as well which means FBI will be on air at least until 2028. This is the second time the series got a multiple season pick-up, however, because it has reached its seniority, there may be some concern that it may get final seasoned at some point during this multiyear run.
There's been no word that the network is seeking to end the program. It's currently the #3 broadcast series. But the procedural is also a co-production between Universal Television and Wolf Entertainment in association with CBS Studios which could play a part in any changes over the next four years as FBI continues to age and therefore gets more expensive. Though with the series being a Dick Wolf production it could carry on for years to come beyond 2028.
Rick Eid is stepping down as showrunner
Soon after FBI was renewed, it was announced that Rick Eid wouldn't be moving forward with the series as a showrunner. While he will still be involved with the series, his time running the program--which he's done since its debut in 2018--has come to an end. Eid shared the following about his decision (per Deadline):
"After six years of running two, or more, shows, and CBS now picking up FBI for three more years, this was the perfect time for me to step back and focus my efforts on running Law & Order and developing new projects. I’m extremely proud of FBI, and couldn’t be happier for the cast, crew and producers. While I will no longer be the day-to-day showrunner, I intend to remain involved with the show going forward."
A new showrunner has yet to be announced.
Season 7 will premiere in Fall 2024
While we don't know exactly when season 7 will make its debut, we can share that CBS is keeping FBI Tuesdays intact. As such, according to the 2024-2025 schedule, the flagship will lead the three hour block as usual starting at 8 p.m. ET. The premiere will likely air in September 2024. With exception to the pandemic affected and Hollywood strikes impacted seasons, FBI has traditionally debuted new seasons during the early Fall TV season.
Episode count
An official episode count for FBI season 7 has yet to be confirmed but the series is expected to return to a 22 episode season for the run. That, however, doesn't mean that we'll be seeing the main cast in every episode. Deadline reports that the minimum episode inclusion for series regular actors will be reduced by two.
The reduction in episodic guarantees aren't new to Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television series. The One Chicago and Law and Order shows faced the same cut last year. The outlet reports: "The timing makes sense as such talent cost-cutting usually follows a renewal that nowadays comes with a flat or reduced license fee."
FBI season 7 cast
At the time of writing, there's been no announcements of cast exits ahead of season 7. The cast expected to return are:
- Missy Peregrym as Maggie Bell
- Zeeko Zaki as Omar "OA" Zidan
- Katherine Renee Kane as Tiffany Wallace
- John Boyd as Stuart Scola
- Alana de la Garza as Isobel Castille
- Jeremy Sisto as Jubal Valentine
We will be missing a familiar face in the JOC. As mentioned earlier, Agent Hobbs, played by Roshawn Franklin, was murdered in the season 6 premiere. The emotional arc for Tiffany in season 6 centered around that loss and it'll likely wrap come the finale.
Charlotte Sullivan also won't be back for season 7. Her guest star role as Jessica Blake ended with her character's death due to complications during surgery. The tragedy resulted in Maggie taking custody of Jessica's daughter, Ella, and the transition to guardian while working as an agent has been a major part of Maggie's storyline.
Shantel VanSanten will likely make appearances in FBI season 7
Though Shantel VanSanten's Nina Chase made the leap to FBI: Most Wanted to become a member of the Fugitive Task Force, we did see her return to the flagship for a crossover episode where she and Scola went undercover as a married couple. We're highly likely to see her make a guest star appearance in season 7 since the two characters have a son together and are romantically involved. However, it's doubtful that she'll be returning to the program as a recurring character since VanSanten is now a member for Most Wanted's main cast.
