With every new year, TV networks introduce us to series that become staples of our weekly viewing but they also set us up to bid adieu to some of our favorite programming as well. All fans know how hard it is to say goodbye to a piece of media we love but at least sometimes we get to do it prepared for the end. This is a list of shows on ABC, CBS, The CW, FOX, and NBC that will be airing their farewell seasons in 2024. Make sure you have your tissues stocked because when those final credits finish, you’re going to be a mess. Here’s what you need to know!
Blue Bloods
Network: CBS
Final season premiere date: Friday, Feb. 16, 2024 at 10 p.m. ET
Streamer: Seasons 1-13 are on Paramount+. Next day streaming is available on the platform as well.
Unlike the other programs on this list, Blue Bloods has an unusual final run. It’ll be split in half. The first 10 episodes will air starting in February and run likely through May on CBS before the procedural takes an extended hiatus for the summer. Then it’ll return for Fall TV 2024 for its remaining eight episodes. In this way the program will get a farewell in a stretch of episodes that isn’t truncated due to the Hollywood strikes which have necessitated 10-13 episode seasons for the majority of the midseason line-up in order for shows to finale in May. A plot has yet to be announced.
Bob Hearts Abishola
Network: CBS
Final season premiere date: Monday, Feb. 12, 2024 at 8:30 p.m. ET
Final episode air date: May 13, 2024
Streamer: Seasons 1-4 are on Max. Next day streaming is available on Paramount+.
Like Blue Bloods, Bob Hearts Abishola went through severe budget cuts which is why the announcement of its final season didn’t come as too much of a surprise. Billy Gardell and Folake Olowofoyeku, who play the comedy’s titular characters, are what remains of the main cast. The rest of the ensemble are now being billed as recurring stars. They’ll appear in at least five episodes of the fifth and final season. In the season 4 finale, Abishola was accepted to John Hopkins University, so it’s expected that the storyline will follow her and Bob’s move to Baltimore. The season will have 13 episodes.
La Brea
Network: NBC
Final season premiere date: Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024 at 9 p.m. ET
Streamer: Peacock. Next day streaming is available on the platform as well.
Unfortunately, La Brea is ending with a far shorter season than the rest of the series on this list. Ahead of the Hollywood strikes it was announced that the show's third season, which has been confirmed as its last, will have a total of six episodes. TVLine reports that for much of the season, Eve will be missing so actress Natalie Zea will only be featured in a handful of scenes. Of course, the storyline for the season will focus on finding Eve.
The Good Doctor
Network: ABC
Final season premiere date: Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2024 at 10 p.m.
Streamer: Hulu. Next day streaming is available on the platform as well.
Sean had a big life change last season on The Good Doctor, and this year we'll be dealing with one of our own now that news has broken that season 7 will be the show's last. The medical drama will come back to our lives in February, reuniting us with Sean as he continues navigating being a new father. But, by the time spring rolls around (likely in May), we'll be biding him a farewell. It looks like this is a year where TV lovers will be bracing extra hard for the end of many beloved shows.
Magnum P.I.
Network: NBC
Series finale date: Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2024 at 9 p.m. ET (two hour finale)
Streamer: Seasons 1-4 on Freevee, season 5 on Peacock. Next day streaming is available on Peacock.
Magnum P.I. is the first show we'll be saying goodbye to in 2024. The program, which got its start on CBS before being cancelled and moved to NBC for its now final season, has been a staple of primetime since 2018. While fans did launch a campaign for the network to reverse the cancellation decision and give the series a sixth season that doesn't seem to be happening. However, we can count on the series finale being satisfactory. Showrunner Eric Guggenheim told TVLine the following, "I actually think it’s quite satisfying. I’m really proud of the finale. There are a couple of threads left dangling that would have been picked up in a Season 6, but I didn’t want to end on a cliffhanger. If I’m being honest, I guess I wanted to play it safe."
Station 19
Network: ABC
Final season premiere date: Thursday, March 14 at 10 p.m. ET
Streamer: Seasons 1-6 are on Hulu. Next day streaming is available on the platform as well.
This announcement came as a shock for fans but with 9-1-1 making the leap from FOX to ABC, the network choosing to sunset Station 19 starts making a bit more sense. The Grey’s Anatomy spin-off stood on its own, gathering an audience invested in the lives of the characters and their stories, so it’s unfortunate that they’ll have to conclude their run in 10 episodes which is a difficult feat for a procedural. However, it's been reported that the decision was made early so that a proper ending could be written for the series. Season 7 will also mark a milestone for the firefighter drama as it’ll reach its 100th episode within it.
Superman & Lois
Network: The CW
Final season premiere date: TBA, expected to be after April
Streamer: Seasons 1-3 are on Max. Next day streaming is available on cwtv.com and the CW App.
It’s the end of an era for The CW. The network had been in the superhero business for over 10 decades but it’ll be hanging up its cape along with Clark Kent when Superman & Lois season 4 finishes its run. The season, which will have 10 episodes, will look quite different for fans used to the superhero family drama’s ensemble cast. The series went through budget cuts that reduced the main cast to Tyler Hoechlin, Bitsie Tulloch, Alex Garfin, Michael Bishop, and Michael Cudlitz. While we could see the remaining members of the cast, if they chose to sign-on as recurring or guest stars, the focus of the plot will be on the Kents and their ongoing battle with Lex Luthor. Filming on the final season is set to begin in January 2024.
S.W.A.T.
Network: CBS
Final season premiere date: Friday, Feb. 16 at 8 p.m. ET
Streamer: Seasons 1-6 are on Netflix. Next day streaming is available on Paramount+.
S.W.A.T. is singular on this list because the procedural had originally been canceled by CBS instead of being greenlit for a seventh and final season. However, the fans and the show’s lead Shemar Moore rallied and the network reversed their decision. The series was given a 13 episode season to wrap up its story in a manner befitting the beloved program. Viewers can anticipate another on-location premiere for the show as filming on the season opener got underway in Mexico in December. The season 7 plot is still underwraps but we know somewhere in it, Hondo and Nichelle will likely be getting married since he proposed in the season 6 finale.
Young Sheldon
Network: CBS
Final season premiere date: Thursday, Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. ET
Final episode air date: May 16, 2023 (one hour series finale)
Streamer: Seasons 1-5 on Netflix; seasons 1-6 on Max. Next day streaming is available on Paramount+.
Young Sheldon’s seventh season will be its last. The Big Bang Theory spin-off all about Sheldon Cooper will charm and amuse viewers for a final run of 14 episodes. We’ve watched the young stars of the show grow up on-screen, it’s hard to believe how fast time has flown. The season 7 plot hasn’t been confirmed, however, we do expect that the aftermath of the tornado will be a part of the story along with Sheldon’s summer abroad in Germany, and whether or not George and Mandie will get married after all.
