Jason George on the Station 19 series finale: "the writers got to write an ending that landed that plane..."

As we close in on the final episode of Station 19, there are concerns that it will be an open-ended episode. Here's what Jason George had to say about it.

We’re still not happy about Station 19 coming to an end. The ending of this Grey’s Anatomy series means the end of some excellent storylines, needed diversity on our screens, and much more. However, there is a concern that the writers will end the series with a major cliffhanger.

We’ve seen this happen with shows, even recently. Just look at the cliffhanger left behind for NCIS: Hawaii after its finale that turned into a series finale. Even shows that knew they were ending had a cliffhanger—hello, Angel! So, what about Station 19? Do we have to worry about this one as well?

There was time for the writers to craft an ending for Station 19

Deadline reported that Station 19 was coming to an end back in December 2024. This would have usually been late in the game, but it wasn’t for the 2023–2024 season. You see, we’d had the strikes all summer, and the writers weren’t able to get back to work until the end of September.

Production of shows didn’t start up until November 2024 at the earliest. Some of them didn’t start until December. That meant a decision made by ABC in December wasn’t actually all that late into the game. The writers had time to craft an ending.

Jason George told The Hollywood Reporter that that’s exactly what happened. The writers could “land that plane.”

"“We got to write a beautiful ending, and we also got to schedule the whole thing and deal with each other knowing that this is going to be goodbye as a family every day.”"

Fans have already seen the first hour of the two-hour series finale. Station 19 and others are dealing with a wildfire threatening the city of Seattle. The penultimate episode left us with lives on the line, including Theo being rushed to hospital after a fallen tree. Maya is trapped in the middle of a fire, threatening Marina being endgame for the series.

However, there is an hour to get everyone out of trouble. George only has good things to say about the finale, and while that could be viewed as PR talk, it does genuinely sound like the actors are happy in the way the writers have been able to craft an ending.

Make sure you have the tissues ready for the series finale

George went on to say that the finale is likely to leave people in tears. That’s the way it left the cast of Station 19.

"“If the audience feels the way we felt in the moment when we saw that last shot, they’ll be in tears.”"

Does this mean character deaths? Well, potentially. We can’t rule anything out when it comes to any series that involves first responders. They all literally put their lives on the line to save people. Firefighters are the crazy ones running into burning buildings. However, it doesn’t mean bad tears.

There’s always that thing of just mourning the loss of a great show. We can have bittersweet tears, as the series could end on a high but with a lot of goodbyes, and that makes us cry. We know Vic is supposed to be leaving as she told Andy she was leaving with Crisis One. Vic wants Travis to go with her, meaning he could leave Seattle. This would bring a bittersweet ending for the characters, leading to tears from them and tears from us.

All I’m going to be happy about is having a well-crafted series finale. So many shows have dropped the ball on series finales in recent years, such as Game of Thrones, Arrow, and Supernatural. It’s time for a show to bring us something to love.
