Not Dead Yet didn't live up to its name, ABC cancels Gina Rodriguez comedy

Sadly for fans of Not Dead Yet, ABC has canceled the comedy after 2 seasons. Why isn't season 3 coming?

Sadly for fans, Not Dead Yet isn’t living up to its name as ABC has made a harsh decision about the Gina Rodriguez comedy.

Debuting in early 2023, the comedy brought Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez back to television. She played Nell Stevens, a reporter who put her career on the sidelines to help her boyfriend’s business. After their breakup, she tries to get back into the newspaper game, but the best she can do is write obituaries.

As Nell tries to put her life together, things take a turn as somehow she’s able to speak to the ghosts of the recently departed she writes about. They give her advice on her life and help her navigate her various problems while she helps them clear up some lingering business before moving on.

The show was renewed for a second season with Brad Garrett joining the cast as Duncan, the rich and self-absorbed father of Nell’s boss Lexi (Lauren Ash). The show wrapped up with a two-part finale on April 24, which had Duncan briefly dying in the hospital. He met Nell as a ghost and it was hinted that he remembered the experience when he recovered.

Unfortunately for fans, it looks like there’s no resolution to that storyline, with ABC deciding the show’s fate.

Why is Not Dead Yet canceled?

After being on the bubble for a bit, ABC confirmed the show is canceled and no season 3 is coming. This isn’t too big a shock as the show’s ratings were poor. The comedy averaged 2.7 million total viewers and a 0.3 demo per TV Line, a comedown from its freshman season.

With ABC wanting to clear the slate for some new comedies and recover revenue lost in the 2023 Hollywood strikes, keeping a series so soft in the ratings doesn’t make much financial sense. It’s sad, but then, the show’s second season renewal was a bit of a surprise in the first place. That made it a risk already in the strike-shortened season.

It is too bad the show never caught on with viewers as it had some fun touches and a great cast. It looked to be building to a bigger season 3, with Rodriguez offering some nice spirit. It’s unlikely another network will step in to save it with the poor ratings.

So, sadly, the show has not lived up to its name as Not Dead Yet is for sure going to end its run sooner than fans would have wanted.

Not Dead Yet seasons 1- 2 are streaming on Hulu.
