Rina Trenholm's death on FBI and its impact on Jubal Valentine
By Sabrina Reed
On Tuesday, Apr. 9's episode of FBI: International, the franchise will be circling back to a storyline that's been left waiting in the wings since 2021. Season 3 episode 8, "Remove the Compromise," will see FBI's Jubal Valentine crossing over to work on a case with the Fly Team and the CIA. They're going after a cartel but it's not just any crime organization. This one has a running history in the franchise--the Durango cartel.
They're led by Antonio Vargas, a thorn in the New York office's side who has caused them both pain and heartache, particularly for Jubal who lost Rina Trenholm, the Assistant Director in Charge who also happened to be his girlfriend. Until this episode, the franchise had put this plot to bed but now they're dusting it off, so here's what you need to know!
How did Rina Trenholm die on FBI?
Rina was shot in season 4 episode 9, "Unfinished Business," but she wasn't working a case or in the wrong place at the wrong time. She and Jubal were actually headed to the office together when the incident occurred. Later in the episode, it was revealed that Antonio Vargas had put a hit out on her, everyone involved in having him imprisoned, and their family members.
The method for carrying out this plan was ingenious. Boxes had been placed in areas that the agents and their loved ones frequented. The devices, placed inconspicuously and discreetly, were programmed to fire upon recognition as it ran on a program that had been fed pictures of them and their loved ones. It was a cold retaliatory measure that befit Vargas' character. When it was revealed he was behind the shooting, despite being in prison, he told Special Agent in Charge Isobel Castille and Jubal why he was targeting them. Check out the full quote via TVInsider:
"Because you played dirty. The last time we spoke, you showed me a video of my wife and my son. You knew that it would change my decision, that I would do whatever it took to keep them safe, including going to jail for the rest of my life."
---
"When FBI agents come into town, people talk, the word spreads. The second your people left Mexico, the hyenas moved in and they got their revenge. My wife and my son, hung from a bridge like rag dolls for everyone to see. And soon, you will all feel the same pain that I feel. … And if Winters doesn’t get the job done, then I will find someone to take his place. And another and another. Until you’re dead."
Vargas' revenge plot left Rina in critical condition. She was taken off of life support by her parents since they had power of attorney, and her passing was a part of season 3 episode 11, "Grief."
Rina's relationship with Jubal
When Rina was first introduced in FBI season 3, she brought with her a dynamic that switched up the way the audience perceived Jubal on the show and, at times, had him on the back foot because of their closeness. The two had a history that predated the start of the series, as they'd been co-workers and then engaged in an affair while they were both married. This was also around the time that Jubal's drinking began to worsen, so she knew him at a difficult point in his life when his addiction was heavily impacting his work and personal decisions.
With Jubal sober, and the two both divorced, they decided to pursue a romantic relationship together as they were in different, more healthier places in their lives and retained their spark despite it being years down the road since their affair. Their romance, however, didn't get too much time to grow on the series due to Rina's shocking death.
Jubal's appearance on FBI: International in "Remove the Comprise" looks to be a way of providing closure for him, and the fans, regarding this storyline that's been left open. Vargas had been stopped, but he vowed to continue to go after the team. Perhaps, his influence will be diminished in this episode, neutralizing him as a threat in the franchise.
