September 2024: 123 shows on TV and streaming to watch this month
It’s the end of the summer doldrums as TV is roaring back big time in September! Here’s a look at the highlights!
Last September was a rough period for TV as the strikes put off most of the regular fall schedule. Thankfully, this year is different as the networks are roaring out with new material and are matched by cable and streamers, too!
There’s the return of old favorites like Grey’s Anatomy, the One Chicago shows, Survivor, and scores of other network shows, while streamers have some fun stuff too. There’s so much to cover, but here are the highlights of what to watch this September to welcome back regular TV!
Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist (Peacock, September 5)
An all-star cast of Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson, Terrance Howard, Samuel L. Jackson, and more are featured in this amazing true-life tale. When Muhammad Ali makes his famed comeback fight in 1970, a gang of crooks rip off the richest people in Atlanta. Blamed for it, one low-level crook forges an unlikely alliance with a cop to find the real guilty parties. Expect some unique period drama alongside the high-powered actors for a compelling crime caper.
Tulsa King (Paramount+, September 15)
Sylverster Stallone returns in season 2 of the new crime drama. As the season begins, Dwight is under arrest and may need to throw his DEA lover under the bus in order to get out of it. Even if he avoids jail time, Dwight faces challenges from his old bosses to a Kansas City mobster (Frank Grillo) who doesn’t appreciate any rivals. Thus, Dwight could be facing a full-scale war that should make season 2 even better than the first.
High Potential (ABC, September 17)
Intended for last year, ABC’s new series should be just the thing for fans of shows like Castle. Kaitlin Olson is the cleaning lady at a police station who stuns the veteran cops by easily solving a baffling murder case. It turns out the single mom has a genius IQ and an unconventional method of solving problems and so is recruited as a consultant. Expect some fun hijinks of the normal gal with the cops to add to TV’s slate of mystery-comedy successes.
Agatha All Along (Disney+ September 18)
The latest MCU entry has Kathryn Hahn reprising her scene-stealing role as WandaVision’s wicked witch, Agatha Harkness. Having been left powerless, Agatha regains her memories and is quickly on a quest for new dark powers. That leads her to form her own coven of misfit witches (including Aubrey Plaza and Broadway icon Patti LuPone), although Agatha has her own plans. It may be a bit early for Halloween, but this show should cast a nice spell on TV viewers.
The Penguin (HBO/Max, September 19)
Picking up where 2022’s The Batman left off, Gotham City is in chaos following a huge flood. Seeing the opportunity, Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot (Colin Farrell) steps up to try and become Gotham’s new crime boss. His chief rivals are the Falcones, led by Clancy Brown’s Salvatore, with Cristin Milioti as Carmine's psychotic daughter Sofia. While that incredible makeup job is impressive, it’ll be more fun seeing Farrell show the Penguin taking over and how you don’t need Batman to make a compelling Gotham City-set show.
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story (Netflix, September 19)
Ryan Murphy is at it again with the second season of the Netflix anthology series. This time, he looks at the infamous case of Lyle and Erik Menendez (Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch), convicted of the brutal murders of their parents. While the boys claimed they were reacting to years of abuse, the prosecutors argued it was just greed. Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny play the parents with Nathan Lane as an investigator and Ari Graynor as their defense attorney. If anyone can find a way to make this story more sensational, it’s Murphy.
Matlock (CBS, September 22)
It’s not quite a reboot of the 1980s Andy Griffith series, but it does share some similarities. Oscar winner Kathy Bates returns to TV as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a former hotshot attorney who joins a high-powered firm. She uses her age to make people underestimate her while having a secret agenda to join this firm. With a cast of Beau Bridges, Jason Ritter and more, it should be a great return to form by Bates to remind folks of her incredible talent.
Rescue: Hi-Surf (Fox, September 22)
Over twenty years after Baywatch went off the air, we finally get a successor, courtesy of Fox. The new drama showcases the lifeguards of one of the busiest and most dangerous sections of the ocean in Hawaii, where rescues are a daily event. The cast looks great, as there’s sure to be some nice interpersonal drama and no doubt some steamy hookups. Paired with 911: Lone Star, it’s going to be another Fox hit to check out and enjoy some beach escapades for the fall.
Brilliant Minds (NBC, September 23)
NBC is right back in the medical drama game with this new series inspired the life of Dr. Oliver Sacks. Zachary Quinto plays the pioneering neurologist Dr. Oliver Wolf who leads a team tackling the mysteries of the human mind. They try to help folks suffering from strange mental conditions with unorthodox methods that always get results. Some big guest stars like Mandy Patinkin take part, while Quinto centers another tale of a maverick doctor that could become yet another big success for NBC.
Murder in a Small Town (Fox, September 24)
This new Fox mystery drama looks to be a more laid-back crime show than the title indicates. Rossif Sutherland is a cop who moves to a small Pacific Northwest town to relax. As it turns out, this quiet town has a lot of secrets that often involve murder, and Sutherland needs to solve them. Kristen Kreuk co-stars as the librarian and his love interest and the show’s shift from moody mystery to lighter work should make this a fun series to check out.
Doctor Odyssey (ABC, September 26)
Remember The Love Boat? Here’s a modern-day equivalent, although it’s more about medical emergencies than shipboard romance. Joshua Jackson is a former top-notch surgeon who nearly died during the COVID-19 pandemic. He’s thus taken a less stressful job as the chief medical officer of a cruise ship. Veteran Don Johnson returns to TV as the captain, with rotating guest stars highlighting the occasional emergency. With a fun cast and setting, set sail for a spin on the medical drama.
