NBC's Brilliant Minds has a star-studded guest cast (3 new roles revealed!)
NBC's Brilliant Minds is building up its cast with some terrific guest stars attached! See who's coming on board the upcoming medical drama!
The network is setting up for its fall season, which has fewer new shows than usual, thanks to the effects of the 2023 Hollywood strikes. A notable exception is Brilliant Minds, which brings back to NBC former Heroes star Zachary Quinto. He'll play Oliver Sacks, a revolutionary neurologist working with his team to study people with mental health issues.
The show is based on the real-life Sacks, a notable surgeon who passed away in 2015. Renowned for his work in the field of brain disorders, his book Awakenings inspired a 1990 film, and the series is based on his other books, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and An Anthropologist on Mars.
NBC is high on the series, ordering it right to a 13-episode season in early 2024. Besides Quinto, the series will star Aury Krebs, Ashleigh LaThrop, Alexander MacNicoll, Spence Moore II, Donna Murphy., Tamberla Perry, and Teddy Sears.
Now we know the show will have some big guest stars on board, too.
Who is guest-starring on Brilliant Minds?
At the NBCUniversal Television Critics Association summer press tour, creator Michael Grassi announced some notable names in the cast, with Steve Howey, Mandy Patinkin, and André De Shields all appearing. "We have exceptional guest stars this season," Grassi said, teasing us that there may be more to come.
De Shields appears in the pilot as an Alzheimer's patient. The actor is known for his work on Broadway, originating the role of the Wizard in The Wiz and earned a Tony Award for Hadestown. He won an Emmy for his turn on an NBC broadcast of Ain't Misbehavin' and recently appeared on CBS' Elsbeth.
Howey will guest star later in the season as a member of a biker gang that comes to Dr. Wolf for treatment. The actor is best known for his turn on the WB/CW sitcom Reba and Showtime's Shameless. Howey recently starred in the short-lived CBS action series True Lies.
Patinkin is scheduled to appear in at least two episodes as a family doctor who visits Bronx General. The actor is, of course, famous for his role in The Princess Bride and his terrific TV career, which includes Chicago Hope, Criminal Minds, Homeland, Death and Other Details, and more. His career includes an Emmy, a Tony award, and more.
It looks like the series will be a typical medical drama with a "case of the week" storyline where Sacks and his team are trying to help a patient in need. This opens the window for numerous guest stars to spark things up. If the rest of the guest cast can match the great talents of these three, then Brilliant Minds is shaping up to be a terrific new addition to NBC's fall lineup!
Brilliant Minds premieres Monday, Sept. 23 at 10/9c on NBC.
