Updated: Thursday, Apr. 25, 2024 - TVLine reports The Equalizer has been renewed for a season 5.

The Equalizer is setting up for a big season 4 finale but the bigger question is if there’s a season 5! Could this unexpectedly be the series finale for the show?

Based on both the 1980s TV show and the hit Denzel Washington movies, The Equalizer premiered on CBS in 2021. It stars Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, a former CIA operative who returns to New York City haunted by her dark past. She soon hires herself out to aid those in need, helped by both friends and family.

The show has been a good success and in May of 2022, CBS gave it a two-season renewal to let it last through season 4. The current season, like all CBS shows, was delayed due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes and cut down to just ten episodes.

Worries are growing that the show may not be able to make it to season 5. The April 21 episode, which aired after a couple of weeks off, gained 6 million viewers and a 0.4 demo rating, a low for the season. There are also concerns over the cast contracts, especially Queen Latifah's, as networks are doing a bit more belt-tightening after losing so much revenue to the strikes.

CBS has already canceled So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas and with hits like Tracker and Elsbeth renewed, there’s less slots on the schedule. That’s without CBS developing other shows like a possible Fire Country spin-off. Put it all together and fans are naturally worried that The Equalizer might end with the season 4 finale, with potentially a big cliffhanger.

Who’s in danger in The Equalizer season 4 finale?

The synopsis for “Shattered,” which airs May 21, has the team taking it personally when Mel is kidnapped by someone in her support group. It also looks like Dante is being offered a big promotion that could end his relationship with McCall.

"The team races against the clock after Mel is kidnapped by a member of her veteran support group and his older brother. Meanwhile, Dante is offered a position with the NYPD’s Special Investigation Unit in Los Angeles."

The show has been doing a good job building up the friendship between Robyn and Dante to the point Robyn’s own mom is encouraging her to just date the guy. Dante is distracted by his wayward father coming back into his life and that may affect his decision on taking a bigger promotion.

That will take a backseat to the gang hunting down who took Mel as this could be tied to her brother, a former soldier who had to fake his death when some folks came after him. The race to save her may put more than one team member in danger.

The bigger question for fans is if, once more, the show ends on a cliffhanger when its renewal chances still appear iffy at the moment. While The Equalizer remains a top CBS series, fans may be right to worry that the upcoming finale could unintentionally be the series one.

The Equalizer airs Sundays at 9/8c on CBS.
