FBI's Maggie Bell has had custody of her friend Jessica Blake's daughter, Ella, since Jess' unexpected death from a complication during a life saving surgery. However, Maggie has had struggled to balance the rigors and risks of her job with caring for Ella who has been grieving the loss of her mother. The two have managed to find their way, especially since Maggie took some time off to be with Ella and bond.

However, my spidey senses started tingling when the season 6 finale, "Ring of Fire," cued to a scene with Maggie watching Ella play in the park with another little girl. Turns out that's Ella's cousin. Maggie had scheduled a playdate between the two so that Ella could have some connection to the family she still has. Though Jess was estranged from her brother, hence the cousins not seeing each other for 2-3 years, he is interested in making sure the cousins spend time together.

That's why, when Maggie was called in to work, he offered to take care of her for the day so the girls could continue to play. Maggie thought that was an excellent idea, but I think that the FBI writers are setting up a way to pull the agent out of a storyline that would require her to be the guardian of a young child.

While the series does have parents among the characters, none of them are raising a child on their own. Jubal's ex-wife has residential custody of their children so he's not involved in the day-to-day care of them. Scola and Nina split parental duties and have a system for their son, Douglas, that works for them and their partnership.

Part of Maggie's season 6 arc has been shaped around the procedural picking back up the thread of her desire to be a mother. However, she was thinking about IVF and setting a plan for what her life would be like and how it would change once she took the step to be a single parent and raise a child on her own with her job as an agent in mind. Becoming Ella's guardian was unexpected and though Maggie has risen to the occasion, it maybe too soon for her to be a mom on the show.

If Ella is written out of FBI either ahead of season 7 or during the upcoming season, we may not get a big plot surrounding the writing move. Departures on the procedural can sometimes be as simple as a line of dialogue. As Ella is a minor character, it would depend on how much of an impact her absence in Maggie's life would be weighed.

But if she is departing, it's her uncle who would be taking custody of her so that Maggie can rest assure that Ella is in a loving home with members of her family. It's unlikely that the writers would do a storyline where Maggie fights for custody of Ella given the dangers of her job and the fact that the young girl would be grow up alongside her cousin.
