Fire Country season 2's opener, "Something's Coming," pulled no punches. The hour long episode carries us through a plot involving Bode's attempt at getting revenge against Sleeper whilst juggling the aftermath of an earthquake as well as the emotional upheaval caused by Bode's decision to accept responsibility for a crime he didn't commit six months prior.
As fans of the series, we could pretty much guess that the writers were going to serve us up a premiere that would get us talking, but I don't think anyone expected them to tie up so many loose ends from season 1. Or hit us with the episode ending that they did. The one-two combo was handled with a finesse that I'm still trying to process. Let's dive into every box they checked off the list.
Sharon got her kidney...off-screen
A major sign that the writers plan on using every episode they have this season wisely is the decision to go ahead and have Sharon not only receive her kidney in the six month gap between the parole hearing and the show's present but also they had her out on a campaign fire. She got a new lease on life with her transplant, and she is not wasting it! That chapter is closed and the show is moving on.
Cara did decide to tell Genevieve she's her mom
The only hand-ringing Cara and Jake were doing in "Something's Coming" was over whether or not to tell Bode that he may have a daughter. Genevieve, however, has known for months that Cara is her biological mother and not her sister. The family that's sprung from Cara's revelation to Jake in the season 1 finale is a new and welcome addition that will have its own complications since Genevieve is close with Jake but isn't really feeling Cara. Add Bode to the mix and well...I'm expecting drama.
Bode found out he could be a dad
While I did have a sneaking suspicion that Bode would find out in the premiere that Genevieve could be his daughter, I certainly didn't expect Jake to be the one to tell him. The news being shared to stop Bode from doing something stupid, however, is very much on brand. Our lead now has something to live for, and it's changed his entire world view because he cannot leave this little girl fatherless that would be beyond the pale.
Bode was released from prison
Look, I wish Bode didn't get out of prison so easily so that the season 1 finale's stakes could be wrapped up in one episode. However, the way this was accomplished was some good TV. No one could have guessed that an earthquake tearing apart Edgewater would be the solution. A ceiling fell on Sleeper. It was do or die, and Bode used that to his advantage and got that man to tell the truth in exchange for saving his life. So, though I might not like that Bode was quickly untangled from confessing to a crime he did not commit, I can't say the writers didn't do their best to make it work.
Gabriela got engaged
As for that unexpected ending, when we learned that Gabriela would be working closely with a military vet turned firefighter to earn her paramedic certification, fans speculated that Diego would turn out to be her new love interest. They were right, but I don't think anyone had "Gabi's going to get engaged to someone who isn't Bode in the premiere" on their bingo card. And not only is she engaged but Bode found out on his first night back at Three Rock. That was their first face-to-face interaction in seven months, him overhearing her excitedly tell Eve that she's getting married and then trying to not look like his heart is breaking as he congratulates her. Y'all, I screamed.
