The Rookie won't return for season 7 in 2024, here's why
The Rookie has been renewed for a seventh season, much to the delight of its fans. This means that we get to see more cases cracked by Officer John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and his team at the LAPD and dip into their lives following their tedious shifts. However, much like the shows that were impacted by the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, season 7 will be shortened, like its predecessor, season six.
We saw the dedicated crime-stopping team take down hardened criminals over the years, including a drug ring in the season three finale, and track serial killers who terrorized Los Angeles. It's not the easiest or safest job, but one that is most needed to keep civilians protected and free from danger. In season 6, Officer Nolan worked overtime while getting situated as a married man to Officer Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan).
Season 7 promises to be packed with even more crime-solving stories and the personal lives of the officers behind it. The Rookie may be bone-chilling to watch at times, but it's a good fictional example of how police do their jobs and how they cope with the effects.
But before fans and viewers can dive into the new stories, we will have to be patient, as it'll be a while, though there's good news regarding the wait.
Why The Rookie season 7 isn't coming in 2024
Along with the shortened seventh season of 18 episodes, the ABC Network recently dropped its 2024-2025 schedule, and The Rookie isn't part of its 2024 Fall lineup. Instead, the popular cop show will return in 2025, as it was pushed to midseason. The season premiere will drop in January and will be partnered again with Will Trent which will also be returning to ABC midseason.
However, the wait could be a good thing, as The Rookie will air back-to-back episodes with no interruptions or repeats, keeping a generous flow going. The back-to-back airing will be applied to other shows, such as The Conners and Will Trent.
According to TVLine's interview with Craig Erwich, the president of the Disney Television Group, he gave solid reasoning for The Rookie season 7 dropping in midseason instead of being part of the fall schedule. Moreover, ABC has big plans for the annual Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve.
"The Rookie and Will Trent are two of the cornerstones of our schedule. The Rookie is an amazing story, where at this point in its life cycle [six seasons in] it continues to grow. We see not just the current season but past seasons drive a tremendous amount of viewing on Hulu. It felt like the best way to platform those shows for success was to launch them in January, when we have this huge promotional platform in New Year's Rockin’ Eve as well as college sports and Christmas programming, and also to give [The Rookie and Will Trent] an uninterrupted run. "
So, as you can see, The Rookie's delayed return is in effort to give its seventh season the launch it deserves and an uninterrupted run, particularly when it comes to nail biting cliffhangers, should suit fans just fine.
