The troubled waters of Euphoria season 3 (Is it time for HBO to pull the plug?)
By Sandy C.
In the words of Maddy, "b**ch, you better be joking!" Euphoria fans are tired, ya'll! The whiplash the series has caused is wild. From the massive gap between seasons 1 and 2, the rumored issues backstage, and the uncertainty about season 3, there's no resting if you're a fan of the HBO hit series.
A third season of Euphoria was pretty much confirmed at the time of the season 2 finale. Fans were left with many questions, particularly the fate of fan-favorite Fez (Angus Cloud). But after the disappointing news that season 3 won't arrive until the year 2025, it now turns out that it may not happen at all. Here's the latest and every speed bump we have been through.
Late last year, on Nov. 2, HBO boss Casey Bloys updated fans on the status of Euphoria season 3 during a press conference. Bloys explained that, due to the strikes, the third season of Euphoria will not premiere until 2025. This is not the only HBO series that had to be pushed back, The White Lotus season 3 and The Last of Us season 2 will also keep us waiting. Before this, filming was expected to begin mid to late February 2023, but now we're not sure when in 2024 (if at all) this will happen.
Other bumps in the road? The sudden exit of Barbie Ferreira, who portrays Kat in the first two seasons. During the summer of 2022, Ferreira announced that she would not be returning as Kat. Initially, drama between Ferreira and series creator Sam Levinson was rumored to be the cause, but this was never confirmed. However, in an interview with Rolling Stone, Ferreira denied any drama and instead simply stated that she would have liked to see Kat be something other than "the fat best friend," commenting:
"I don't want to play that [the fat best friend], I don't think they wanted to either. I would've played her [Kat] for as long as I was asked to, depending on what the material was. Sam writes for things that HE relates to. I don't think he relates to Kat. I relate to Kat."
Another actor we will not see in Euphoria season 3 (if it happens), is Angus Cloud, who portrayed the lovable Fez. The actor sadly passed away in July 2023 at the age of 25. The main stories may not have centered on Cloud's character, but there's no doubt that Fez was the heart of the show. And, honestly, we don't want a season without Fez. It's just too heartbreaking.
Still, HBO seemed to want to move forward with another season of Euphoria. According to Variety, from a March 25, 2024 report, Euphoria season 3 is still in the works. However, if you were to ask Zendaya, who is arguably the key part of the series, about season 3, she couldn't tell you a thing. As it turns out, Zendaya has no idea whether or not a third season is happening, which isn't very hopeful, to say the least.
Zendaya told Variety on April 16, 2024, that she does not know what, if any, the season 3 plans are. The star does, however, want to play Rue again if "it's right for the characters and everything turns out the way it should...but it's beyond me."
When will the madness stop? As soon as we have more updates, we'll be sure to let you know!
