The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live filming locations (where was it filmed?)
The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live looks to be another epic entry in the hit zombie-fighting franchise! But just where was this new spinoff filmed? Find out here!
Since 2010, The Walking Dead has been one of television’s most amazing shows. Based on the hit comic book, it focuses on the survivors of a zombie plague wrecking the world, and each season shows some stunning action and drama. The show's success has given birth to several spin-offs.
At the center for the first nine seasons was Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, a former sheriff who became leader of the survivors. It appeared that Rick was killed in a bridge explosion, but he was actually whisked away by the Civic Republic Military, a military group who try to keep “order” with a brutal iron fist.
At last, Lincoln will reprise his role in the new spinoff, The Ones Who Live. After years of being forced to work for the CRM, Rick is trying to rebel against the organization in his own way. Fate will bring him face to face with his former love, Michonne (Danai Gurira), the warrior who’s been searching for him for years.
The long-awaited reunion will be marred by the battles against both the undead Walkers and the CRM as the show looks to be another wild entry in The Walking Dead universe. So just where was this new drama filmed?
Where was The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live really filmed?
Like the original Walking Dead, some segments of the show were filmed in Atlanta, Georgia. However, the bulk of it took place in New Jersey, a surprising move for the show to do. As detailed on NJ.com, the Brendan Byrne Arena was used as a makeshift soundstage to film interior scenes, most likely those for the CRM headquarters and training center. Other areas used include the Ramapo Mountains in upper Passaic County and Eatontown in Monmouth County. There was also Broad Street, University Avenue, and at Branch Brook Park as well as outside the Prudential Center, Marion P. Thomas Charter School and Masonic Oriental Lodge on Fulton Street.
Other notable locations included Newark and Ringwood State Park, a landfill in Lyndhurst; Passaic Avenue in East Newark; the large Monmouth Mall, Port Jersey in Bayonne; several youth camps; and the former Toys R Us headquarters in Wayne. Speaking to NJ.com, showrunner Scott Gimple discussed using the state (where he grew up) to give this spinoff a different air.
"“I think when I was growing up, there were maybe a lot more places that were a little more ‘Walking Dead’-ish than there are today, which made us do a bunch of work to make some stuff more ‘Walking Dead’-ish.”"
- Scott Gimple
Gimple noted that it was a “frenetic” production much different from filming in Georgia. However, he was grateful to the crew for making it all work and confident fans will enjoy this spinoff as much as the rest of The Walking Dead universe.
The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET only on AMC.
