Get ready, Bold fans, because The Bold and the Beautiful has a surprise for us on Friday, June 21. Yes, I’m giving it away now, you know we love a spoiler. Matthew Atkinson is set to return as Thomas Forrester! That’s right, Ridge’s wayward eldest son is leaving the city of lights to come back home to Los Angeles.

It’s been quite some time since we saw him and a lot has changed. His ex, Hope Logan, is currently fighting off feelings for his sister’s husband, Dr. John Finnegan. His dad, who’d spent last year wanting to have more control of Forrester Creations’ future, now is taking a step back to design more. In his place, though he isn’t shirking the title of Co-CEO, Brooke will be taking over the reins as an executive member of the team. And, though this won’t surprise him, Hope for the Future is one bad quarter away from getting canceled. So he'll immediately be inserted into an interesting array of storylines.

Thomas Forrester's return to Bold and the Beautiful comes with a 'shock'

In an interview with Soap Opera Digest, Atkinson didn’t give much away about what fans can expect when Thomas comes home in tomorrow’s episode, but what he did tease has us on tenterhooks.

"Thomas has had one particular very large change in his life since he left town. And when he comes back, it is something that shocks everyone.”"

What could this shocking change be? Let's speculate!

Off the bat, the mind jumps to Thomas finding love in Paris. It’s possible he could be coming home with a girlfriend, or perhaps a wife since he was so eager to find someone to spend his life with and couldn’t get Hope on the same page as he was. While there have been no casting announcements for a new actress on the soap that doesn’t mean a new lady love is out of the realm of possibility. This is supposed to be a shocking return after all.

But, if we can’t expect Thomas to have a spring in his step because he’s in a healthy and happy relationship, perhaps the big change is that Douglas will be staying in Paris. He and his son left LA together but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re set to return at the same time. If the writers have nowhere to go with the child’s story right now, and aren’t interested in keeping Thope as co-parents, they could place him in boarding school.

This has always been the go-to method of giving reason for why older children aren’t on-screen. That’s been the excuse for Will Spencer for some time now, though he is set to return on August 1 (here’s who’s playing the SORASed version of him!). It’s possible that Douglas liked Paris enough to want to stay and, since The Bold and the Beautiful have yet to give us an update on Taylor, he’s not only going to continue going to school there but will have his grandmother present as well so he’s not left on his own in France.

Thomas coming back to Los Angeles without Douglas would certainly be a shock and it would cause drama since he wouldn’t have looped Hope into that decision. There’s already going to be tension between the two because of how things ended but Thomas making a choice like that when Hope has been struggling without her son is sure to be a hot button issue on the soap.

But regardless of what the shock turns out to be, I’m just happy that Atkinson will be on our screens sooner than we expected. He’s truly been missed on The Bold and the Beautiful.
