Bring on the tears: Young Sheldon season 7 will feature a wedding, and that dreaded character death

Georgie and Mandy will indeed get married, but unfortunately George's fate is sealed. And not in a good way.

We come bearing some bittersweet news. As predicted, Young Sheldon season 7 is going to feature two major plot lines that will make us cry. One of them we'd like to see, while the other is what we've been dreading. But whether we like it or not, it's canon and going to happen. Young Sheldon season 7 will play out Mandy and Georgie's wedding (yay!), but also see George's death (cue the waterworks).

In an interview with TVLine ahead of the season premiere - Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024 on CBS - Young Sheldon executive producer Steve Holland shared the two upcoming storylines. Let's start off with the happy tears. Last season, we saw how Mandy proposed to Georgie and we were expecting the parents of baby CeeCee to tie the knot in the final season. And now it's been confirmed it's happening.

“There’s a wedding coming up," Holland told TVLine. "That’s been really fun, and I think it’s the most people we’ve ever had in a scene together, so that’s exciting.”

Holland didn't share which episode we can expect to see the wedding. Young Sheldon season 7 will feature a total of 14 episodes, and the outlet reports that production is currently filming about halfway through the season. So we might not need to wait until the end to see the big day! It will be interesting to see where Mandy and Georgie leave off with the planned, but not yet confirmed, potential spin-off in the works.

And now for the sad tears. Another major plot point that might come sooner than we'd like is George's death. The patriarch of the Cooper household's fate has been set since The Big Bang Theory, and us fans had a feeling this story was coming. Especially with Young Sheldon season 7 being the last. Though the prequel hasn't always stuck to canon strictly, Holland told TVLine this story is too big not to address.

“I don’t want to say what you will or won’t see, but things will get addressed. We are not beholden to every joke that was ever made on The Big Bang Theory, but we do feel beholden to the larger canon and the larger events that shape Sheldon’s life. We want to honor those.”

I've said this before, but what makes this really hard is the fact that George has become a much more likable character on Young Sheldon. Does he have his flaws? Yes. Was he necessarily the perfect dad? Maybe not. But he really did care about his family. The stresses that come with a limited income and a gifted child may not have helped George and Mary see eye to eye most of the time. Though that doesn't mean he wasn't a supportive dad. At least from what we've seen in the last six seasons.

Now the other big question is whether George's cheating storyline is going to come up, as that has not been confirmed or denied by the show's creative team. We'll have to wait and see what the writers decide to do. Though get ready, the waterworks are coming. Both for a happy occasion of the wedding, but also the I'm sure very emotional episodes and moments to come with George's death and how this will affect the whole Cooper family.
