Will Trent is coming back for Season 3 and Ramon Rodriguez is giving hints it won't be the same Will!

It’s been a long wait for fans of Will Trent. Season 2 of the popular crime drama had a stunning finale as Will (Ramon Rodriguez) realized that long-time on/off love and best friend Angie (Erika Christensen) had covered up a murder and was forced to arrest her. He then went off on his own.

With ABC deciding to hold Season 3 off until 2025, fans haven’t been sure what to expect. However, we’re getting hints not just in the trailer, but also in an exclusive first look via TVLine!

As the trailer shows, Season 3 starts six months after the Season 2 finale, as Will has dropped off the grid and out of the loop. That changes when Amanda Wagner (Sonja Sohn) tracks him down and demands Will come back for a case involving his own past.

It’s going to be a different Will, though, not in his usual dapper suits but in jeans and a t-shirt and a bit worse for wear. He’s entering a tough situation as partner Faith (Iantha Richardson) has taken up his spot as a top detective and is still angry with Will over leaving without a word. Angie herself is out of jail but is shown pleading at a hearing to be reinstated as a cop.

We also get Gina Rodriguez as Marian Alba, the new ADA who might be a new love interest for Will. The trailer ends showing Will back in his suit and ready for the job, but he may not be the same guy.

TVLine added a special preview of the premiere, where Will is brought to a crime scene with Angie and her partner, Special Agent Gross (Douglas Smith). It seems to involve Will’s foster home as he brushes off wearing a vest to enter and someone points a gun at him.

All this just adds to the excitement for Season 3!

Ramon Rodriguez on what’s coming in Season 3 of Will Trent

Speaking to TV Insider, Ramon Rodriquez acknowledged that this is going to be a much different Will in Season 3 as he’s still not quite over his arrest of Angie.

“It’s really, really rough in the first several episodes, and once Will and Angie finally do get to be face to face, it’s not an easy thing. They both have their reasons for being upset at each other, and Will has his reasons of why he did what he did, and so it’s really complicated, and hopefully audiences will be happy.”

Rodriguez indicates that Will is a bit more open on some things, like his dyslexia, and Season 3 has a key character named Raphael, who Will feels indebted to from something in their past and becomes a recurring focus.

“Where last season we felt Will was really haunted and exploring things from his past and his childhood, I think this one is a lot about where he’s at now and what’s happening. And we also have some pretty intense events that end up really affecting Will — and possibly forever.”

With so much drama abounding and a much different look for our lead character, Will Trent Season 3 looks to be even better than ever to continue this major ABC hit!

Will Trent Season 3 premieres on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 8/7c on ABC.
