We finally have a hint as to who Ryan Phillippe is playing in 9-1-1: Nashville season 2, even if there’s more unknown.
911: Nashville wrapped up its first season on ABC as a major success. The new spin-off of the hit franchise established itself with the same mix of action and drama as the original series, and no surprise, it earned a second season renewal. It appears the main cast will be intact, although it’s going to have a major addition in TV veteran Ryan Phillippe coming in for what was previously a mystery role.
Speaking to On the Red Carpet at the Disney upfronts in May, Phillippe (accompanying stars Chris O’Donnell and Kimberly Williams-Paisley) finally shared some hints about his character and how it plays into season 2.
“I can’t give away too much but I’m a detective from New York, who’s gonna, like stir things up a little bit.”
The addition of Phillippe is a good one. The actor rose to fame in the late 1990s with roles in hit films like I Know What You Did Last Summer and Cruel Intentions, where he met his future wife, Reese Witherspoon. The last decade has seen Philippe move into television, with roles in Shooter, Big Sky, and Motorheads.
Seeing Phillippe on 911: Nashville is a good turn, and it also appears that, like the parent 911 series, this opens the door to more stories using the police alongside the emergency workers. It also promises some major drama.

In an interview with TV Insider, showrunner Rashad Raisani teased that Phillippe’s character is tied to a larger investigation into a master criminal terrorizing Nashville. He also discussed the possible connections to other characters.
“There may be a moment where he realizes that he and Blythe [Jessica Capshaw] might have crossed paths at one point, but he has no deep history. He’ll be playing this sort of maverick detective who comes in and he’s kind of a disruptor in a different way, and he’ll get in Don’s [Chris O’Donnell] craw, but he’ll also have a real affinity and friendship with Ryan [Michael Provost], Don’s son. And it will start almost this weird father-son triangle with somebody else.”
Raisani hinted that there’s a chance Phillippe’s character and Blythe dated when she was in college in New York. It doesn’t sound like it was serious, yet Raisani teased, “There will be some sparks though, I will tell you that much. It just depends if it’s a first impression or if it’s maybe a rekindling.”
This may play into the ongoing drama between Blythe and Don, who are having it out over Don’s ex, Dixie (LeAnn Rimes), with Don seemingly agreeing to sleep with Dixie in exchange for her not releasing a “diss track” about Blythe. The season ended with the two women engaging in a wild fight. Perhaps Blythe tries to overcome this with a hookup with an old flame in Phillippe?
We’ll still see how it unfolds yet adding Phillippe to the cast makes 911: Nashville even hotter for the fandom!
911: Nashville season 1 is now streaming on Hulu.
