Hondo is officially back, but his homecoming to SWAT isn’t what fans might be expecting.
“I read your personal files, all of them, and I saw what they saw: rejections, flaws, and reasons to pass you all over. Then they paired you with me; a disgrace has been clinging to his badge: that is what they say about me behind my back. They didn’t pick us to succeed or reform anything. They picked us all to burn together,” Hondo bluntly warns his team in the action-packed first trailer for the new SWAT spinoff, SWAT Exiles.
That’s right, Hondo might be back, but the former leader of one of SWAT’s most elite squads has fallen from grace between the events of SWAT and SWAT Exiles and is about to be thrust into an unwinable situation. However, as SWAT fans know, you should never count Hondo out, and there is no such thing as an unwinable outcome for the determined veteran of SWAT.
SWAT Exiles welcomes the return of Shemar Moore as Sergeant Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, who spent his career defying the odds and proving that discipline and loyalty can be built, not just born. As fans will come to learn in the show, Hondo is forced out of SWAT after a raid goes wrong, resulting in the death of a young operator. After losing his job and being forced to walk away, Hondo gets a second chance when his former commanding officer, Robert Hicks, gives him a chance at redemption by leading the new SWAT unit full of talented rejects.
The new trailer gives us a look at both Hicks' return with a few tense moments between Hondo and his former commanding officer, while also giving fans their first look at the new team behind Hondo. While this group might be rejects, it's clear from the footage pieced together in the trailer that these recruits might have checkered pasts, but they're certainly not lacking talent!
Among those we get to meet officially in the trailer are Ronen Rubinstein's Jude Callan, a wildcard with a troubled past; Lucy Barrett's Sammy Bishop, a gun-show influencer with something to prove; Freddy Miyares' Ethan Cole, a socially awkward tactical savant; Zyra Gorecki's Cassidy Reed, a guarded and determined officer wanting to earn her place on the team; and Adain Bradley's Malik Anderson, a sharp, ambitious recruit who is hiding more than anyone realizes. Could what he's hiding be that he's been placed on the team as a mole?
“There’s a mole on my team,” Hondo reveals in the trailer, hinting that someone on his team has been reporting back to someone high in the food chain, feeding them information that could lead to the downfall of Hondo's new unit. It's clear the mystery of who the mole on the team is will be a central part of the first season of SWAT Exiles.
We'll have to watch to see who that mole ends up being and how Hondo will deal with the situation once their identity is uncovered. What we do know is that Hondo will get help from at least a few old friends as he embarks on this new journey!
In addition to Patrick St. Esprit's return as Hicks, the trailer also gives us a brief glimpse at Jay Harrington's return as Deacon. It seems Hondo will turn to Deacon for help along the way, and it seems whatever mission he's enlisted for, they're going to need "a bigger team," as Deacon warns.
