The Weather Channel Launches Local Now, Debut Network App

The Weather Channel is branching out into unknown territory with the debut of its first network app, Local Now.

Things are looking particularly sunny this Thursday afternoon for The Weather Channel, as the network has announced the debut of its first ever content app, Local Now! The new ad-free Local Now app looks to provide users access to localized news, weather, sports, traffic informations and more from The Weather Channel and its various content partners.

“We are excited to offer a new, more modern way to watch local news — one that is live and on-demand, whenever the viewer wants it, with the content that matters,” said Freddy Flaxman, COO of The Weather Channel. “The Weather Channel has been a leading provider of local weather video with segments like Local on the 8s. Applying this experience to traffic, news and sports content is a natural next step for us.”

Through the Local Now app, The Weather Channel looks to give users up-to-the-minute information from the location of their choosing with in-depth severe weather coverage and analysis from The Weather Channel’s trained experts. Users with subscriptions to participating television providers will also have access to the network anytime and anywhere.

Through its customized weather, sports, traffic and news coverage users can stay up to date with the current happenings of their location. It’s an ideal app for travelers who like to keep in touch with their surroundings but are unfamiliar with the area’s local news organizations.

Fans can download the Local Now app beginning today on their Android and iOS smartphones and tablets – upon downloading, users will be asked to select their pay TV provider before logging in.
