In this week’s episode of Freeform’s ‘Shadowhunters,’ titled “Dust And Shadows,” Clary takes desperate actions to bring her mother back from the dead.

Tormented with guilt, Alec shoots arrows from the roof of the Institute down to the streets of New York. Jace finds him and tries to convince him to come back inside, but Alec believes he’s responsible for the death of Jocelyn, his parabatai’s mother. He activates a rune to jump from the roof to the street, telling Jace that he alone should be blamed for her death, and Jace let’s him run.

Simon recites Hebrew prayers with Clary, who still needs to find Luke. While talking to Simon about how hurt Clary was after Simon’s death, she realizes that (just like she did with Simon) she could also try to get Jocelyn back from the dead. We don’t like where this is going…

“I know how much you loved her, but sometimes there are just things you have to accept.”

Simon rationalizes Clary’s plan and tries to talk her out of pursuing the idea, saying, “I know how much you loved her, but sometimes there are just things you have to accept.” They go to Magnus anyway, who outright rejects Clary’s wishes. The magic is too dark and wildly unpredictable, and Magnus admits that he’s never brought someone back from the dead before. In a startling revelation, we learn that Magnus’ mother committed suicide when Magnus was just nine years old, after realizing that she had given birth to a warlock. Magnus reminds Clary that he is responsible for wiping all of Clary’s memories from her mind, and so he gives Clary one of his own memories of Jocelyn and Clary together.

Aldertree announces to the Institute that Jace Wayland has been exonerated of all crimes because of how bravely he fought for the Clave. We see that Izzy’s out of the infirmary, and we learn that Lydia is recovering well. The other Shadowhunters are throwing shade at Jace though, not trusting his intentions.

Clary and Jace meet in the chapel, standing over Jocelyn’s wrapped body. Clary realizes that Jace is grieving the loss of his mother too. Jace wishes that Jocelyn had more time to get to know him “as more than just an experiment gone wrong.” He warns Clary not to try and bring Jocelyn back, saying that there’s no way of knowing what she’ll be like.

Clary, more determined than ever, finds the profile of Dr. Iris Rouse on the Institute computer, and sets of off to her home. Clary comes right out with it and asks her if she can bring her mom back from the dead, and Dr. Rouse encourages Clary, showing her a dead bird that she promptly brings back from the dead.

Dr. Rouse explains that she is a doctor who treats mundanes, and introduces Clary to her god-daughter Madzie, a young girl who doesn’t speak much. Clary learns that she’ll need a piece of her mother’s DNA and will need to pay a fee, but knowing that Clary doesn’t have much money, Dr. Rouse agrees to bring Jocelyn back in exchange for a favor from Clary in the future.

There’s no way this is going to end well.
