This Is Us’ TCA Award nominations bode well for Emmys

As Emmy season continues — and campaigns carry on — NBC gets some good news in the form of four TCA nominations for This Is Us.

The Televisions Critics Association (TCA) announced the nominations for the 2017 awards on Monday and This Is Us received four nominations, according to Variety.

This Is Us was nominated for Individual Achievement in Drama (specifically, the god Sterling K. Brown), Outstanding New Program, Outstanding Achievement in Drama and Program of the Year. NBC also received nominations for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, Outstanding New Program and Individual Achievement in Comedy (Kristen Bell), all for The Good Place.

The TCAs offers a few interesting spins on standard award shows. A smaller number of awards generally, the association recognizes individuals by genre, but does not segment by gender. Yet it also recognizes the broad range of TV program types, there are a number of awards that a show can be nominated for — in addition to the broad Program of the Year, there are individual awards for new shows, miniseries or movies, drama, comedy, news and information, youth programming and reality programming.

The winners of the TCA Awards will be announced on August 5, a little over a month before the Emmys on September 17. The Emmy nominations, of course, will be announced in mid-July at which point we can all begin our aggressive support of NBC’s This Is Us campaigning. (We’re already reaping the benefits in the form of adorable segments, spontaneous musical performances and rumor-inspiring interviews.)

Last year, FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story swept Program of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries and Specials and Individual Achievement in Drama (for Sarah Paulson). Paulson went on to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie and The People v. O.J. Simpson won for Outstanding Limited Series. However, The Americans, which one the TCA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Drama lost out to Game of Thrones at the Emmys. There is no overall best program Emmy.

The 2017 TCA Awards, which typically are not broadcast, will be hosted by Kristin Chenoweth.
