Chrissy Metz teases new direction for Kate’s season 2 storyline
Chrissy Metz revealed Kate’s story may focus less on weight and more on chasing her dreams in season 2.
It’s been an exciting week for the stars and fans of This Is Us. For cast and crew, because so many of the Pearson fam and friends received Emmy nominations. For us, well, the same reason except less tied to personal achievement. But according to Emmy-nominated actress Chrissy Metz (isn’t that fun to say?), there’s more excitement in store for her character Kate when the show returns this September.
This Is Us season 2 has begun shooting and as such, the cast is slowing getting to see the full picture of what the writers and creator Dan Fogelman have in store. While they’re mostly sworn to silence, Metz did tease some of what’s to come for Kate during an E! News congratulatory Emmy segment.
Speaking to Kristin Dos Santos, Metz said her first emotion was excitement when reading the new script, specifically because she feels “like Kate is doing things that she’s wanted to do for so long, desperately.”
When Dos Santos pushes her as to whether that means singing, the actress said “maybe a little something, something” before caveating that, “monkey wrenches get thrown across your life all the time.” So for all the excitement, there’s also a lot of growth in store for Kate.
Fans and critics of the show alike have bristled at the focus season 1 placed on Kate’s weight. While the performance and show received praise for the way it accurately addressed how multifaceted and complex obesity and significant weight loss can be, there was also a fair amount of frustration that weight was, once again, the defining element in a plus-sized character’s story.

As such, the intimation that Kate’s singing career will be the focus of her storyline in the second season is welcome news. More likely than not, her weight will continue to inform her story. After all, many people who struggle with eating habits, weight loss and/or body image describe it as a constant presence in all aspects of their life. That said, centering her other goals, dreams and life events — she also has a wedding to plan — is, to steal Metz’s word of choice, exciting.
