Bugs may be one of the worst episodes in Supernatural, but there are some hilarious moments. But what about the things you missed the first time watching it?

Supernatural Season 1, Episode 8 didn’t have that many things that jumped out the second time watching it. I will be honest and say the main reason I watch this episode is for the moments between the brothers. We learn far more about their upbringing and the way that Sam believes his dad has always been disappointed.

However, there are a small number of elements missed the very first time. Some of these are because of things that happen years in the future, so it’s understandable that you’ll miss them the first time.

More from Supernatural

Two future Supernatural actors appear in the episode

The biggest thing you’ll miss is the fact that Supernatural recycles two of the actors from this episode. The first doesn’t occur until Season 8 and the second is in Season 11!

The Season 8 actor from “Bugs” is Tyler Johnson, the actor who plays young Matthew Pike. Unfortunately, the show missed a beat with the recycling of this character. Rather than playing an older Matthew, Johnson took on the role of Alfie, who would become the vessel for the angel Samandriel. Samandriel didn’t last too long in the show. After being tortured by Crowley, Samandriel accidentally revealed information about the angels. Naomi ordered his death and Castiel had to follow through with the order.

Supernatural’s second recycled actor was Carrie Genzel. The actress, who played Lynda Bloome in Bugs, would go on to play Linda Berman in Seas 11, Episode 8, “Just My Imagination.” Linda was the mother of the little girl, Maddie, whose imaginary friend was one of the first to die in the episode.

The extremely bad CGI

Don’t be ashamed if you missed this the first time. Back in 2005, CGI wasn’t the greatest anyway and it may have looked okay at first. 11 years on, the CGI looks absolutely terrible. The biggest one I noticed watching the episode a few nights ago was the spiders in the bathroom. Just the first one is terribly imposed onto the shower wall, but the rest make it look even worse.

The bees at the end weren’t too bad, even though they were CGI’d in. You may not have realized that there were real bees in the end of the episode, as they don’t show up on the camera.

Dean looks like he’s lying to Sam

This is something I’ve noticed more and more as I watch the older episode. When Dean tells Sam that John would go to Stanford to check that Sam was safe, there’s a look that tells us Dean is lying. Whether this was intentional or not is unknown, but Dean has this tell when he’s lying. He looks away and sort of shrugs.

It’s probably more likely that John wasn’t the one checking up on Sam, at least not that regularly. Many fans wonder whether Dean was the one to check up on his little brother more often.

Alternatively, Dean wasn’t lying about John. He was more disappointed in himself. It’s clear that Dean feels Sam abandoned the family by going to college. We later find out that Dean had to deal with John’s wrath. Dean may be ashamed that it was John checking up on Sam rather than Dean.
