Say what you will about the creatures on Supernatural. There are some interesting and loveable creations, as well as dark and mysterious ones. But not all were accepted right away.

Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki trust their writers. They love their show and are willing to take risks, and that may be part of how Supernatural is airing its 13th season next week. However, not all decisions have been instantly accepted. There was one particular creature that the two co-stars weren’t certain about when initially mentioned in Season 2.

Ironically, this particular creature has become one of the most love and most hated at the same time. It all depends on which particular person you see on screen.

What are we talking about?

Angels, of course!

"“We didn’t want to be a mouthpiece for writers’ religious views, because it wasn’t the show that we had signed up for. Our argument was, ‘We trust you. You’ve done good by us so far. However, this is our one concern, and we’re just bringing it to the table so that we can discuss it’.”–Jensen Ackles"

Originally mentioned in Supernatural Season 2, angels weren’t initially considered a good idea by Ackles and Padalecki, who play Dean and Sam Winchester. The actors didn’t want their serialized TV show to become a religious platform for the writers, which certainly could have been the case with the introduction of the writers. While they have their own faith, they didn’t want to push that on their viewers.

At no point did they say they definitely wouldn’t accept angels, but they weren’t going to stick with the show if it took a more religious route. Eric Kripke and others listened to their concerns about what could happen to the show and thought again about the inclusion of angels. By Season 4 the storyline was created and our first angel, Castiel, made his way on screen.

"“They heard us out, and I think that’s why they waited another year and a half before introducing our second and most famous angel. I think it’s the one time we’ve ever called them together with a complaint. Because I’m not a writer. I don’t want to be a writer. I enjoy my job as an actor. But that was legitimately like, ‘Listen, if you’re going here about religion, I don’t want to be a part of it’.”–Jared Padalecki"

Castiel is now one of the most loved characters on the show. Yet, angels are also among the most hated. We just have to look at the likes of Zachariah, Metatron, Naomi, and even Raphael to see how much passion fans have against them. Yet then we look at Gabriel, Balthazar, Castiel, and even Lucifer and see how much love there is for them.

Fortunately, the mythology within Seasons 4 and 5 worked out. People of all religions tune in and Ackles and Padalecki have even spoken to priests, nuns, and pastors who are fans of the show. They must be doing something right!
