There have been three Prophets on Supernatural so far: Chuck, Kevin and Donatello. Who were they, what did they do, and will we see another one?

More from Supernatural

According to Google, a prophet is “a person regarded as an inspired teacher or proclaimer of the will of God.” With a show like Supernatural, that has so many ties to heavenly lore, it isn’t a surprise that we have seen prophets on the show. In fact, we’ve had three prophets in the run of the show: Chuck, Kevin and Donatello.

All had vastly different roles as prophets, but they were equally important.  With the introduction of Lucifer’s son, and his unknown quality, it would be possible another prophet could be introduced.

But before we talk about that, let’s talk about who Kevin, Chuck and Donatello are, and what role they played as prophets.

Chuck Shurley

Fans of Supernatural  now recognize Chuck as God. However, before being revealed as God, the show introduced him in Season 4 as a prophet.  The Winchesters met him as Carver Edlund, the author of the Supernatural books.  While talking with the brothers, they learned he received his inspiration for the books through visions. He then turned these visions into books he published about the brothers. Chuck’s visions became essential to defeating Abaddon and Lucifer and Michael.

Chuck’s role as a prophet took on a role that was mostly on the outskirts of the action. He wrote about the events as they were happening, but he didn’t communicate very much with the Winchesters. There were a few instances when he directly helped the brothers with his visions, but he didn’t even willingly reveal himself. The brothers had to track him down.

In the Season 5 finale, Chuck’s narration is what drove the plot forward. His last job as a prophet was to document the fight at the pit. Once finished, he had completed his role as a prophet and was brought up to heaven. At least, that is what we were led to believe.

Kevin Tran

Kevin  was introduced in Supernatural Season 7. As a prophet, Kevin’s role was a lot more active than Chuck’s. Kevin eventually moved into the bunker with Sam and Dean. Where Chuck was an outside observer using his role as a scribe to document the lives of the Winchesters leading up to the fight at the cage, Kevin was in the middle of everything.

As a scribe it was his job to translate the demon and angel tablets. His ability to translate the tablets led to his life constantly being in danger. Both Crowley and Metatron wanted to either use his abilities for their gain, or kill him so he couldn’t use his abilities at all.

Being the only person, mortal and immortal, who could read these tablets made Kevin an important character. Ultimately, Kevin’s active role with the Winchesters led to his death, thus ending the roles of prophets on the show.

Donatello Redfield

A self confessed atheist, Donatello Redfield was a professor and the sole survivor in his town when he was hit by a lightning bolt. That bolt of lightning was God creating another prophet, after the death of Kevin.

Donatello doesn’t want anything to do with his newly acquired talents at first, but like with any prophet he has no choice. Because of his visions, he’s able to locate The Darkness, who has Lucifer by this point. After Lucifer is saved, Donatello parts ways with the Winchesters but is later attacked by Amara. She sucks out his soul to get the Men of Letters’ bunker location.

Another Prophet?

Supernatural Season 13  is introducing Lucifer’s son into the world. However, whether Jack will be on the side of good or evil is yet to be seen. Could this be an opportunity to introduce a new prophet on the scene?

In the past, it has taken the role of a prophet or even God himself to stop the acts of powerful beings from both heaven and hell. If Jack turns out to be on the side of evil, it’s logical they may need intervention from a prophet again.

With God leaving his role to spend time with his sister at the end of Season 11, it would make sense that he would leave any clean up involved with Jack to a lesser being, like a prophet. It’s also been more than two seasons since the show has had an active prophet, so it’s more than overdue to introduce a new one on the scene.
