Supernatural: Why Michael exceeded our expectations in less than 10 minutes

Michael got less than 10 minutes of screen time in Supernatural Season 13, Episode 2, but he managed to exceed our expectations.

The last time we saw Michael, he was getting pulled into Lucifer’s cage in Adam’s vessel. In fact, despite being a major player in the apocalypse in Supernatural Season 5, he was seen on just two occasions. Both times for not even 10 minutes or so.

It’s not surprising that omy expectations for Michael in Supernatural Season 13 weren’t great. With a new actor (Christian Keyes) taking on the role, I was going to give him a chance. But there was part of me not entirely convinced that Michael would be a great player in the alternate world. The saving grace was that this was a Michael that won the apocalypse.

Within less than 10 minutes he exceeded my expectations. He has become the character to look forward to. But how is that possible?

One word: strength

There’s just one reason why Michael exceeded expectations. Sure he had the amazing entrance (credit to the Supernatural graphics guys and gals for the wings in the smoke), but that wasn’t the thing that drew me in. It was Keyes’ portrayal.

In Season 5, Michael wasn’t quite as strong as he could be. We didn’t get enough of him on the screen and when he was there, he just seemed like an annoying, threatening bully. There was very little strength about him. He can’t even cope with Lucifer’s cage, something that Lucifer had been trapped in for centuries before Sam let him out when he killed Lilith.

While I was keeping my mind open about the new Michael, I was worried we’d go down that route. I feared this would be a character that I’d roll my eyes at and want gone by the midseason finale; one that I’d want to see Lucifer defeat.

Yet, this alternate Michael embodies strength and power. He doesn’t come across as the big bully, but as a force to be reckoned with. Rather than use a few idle threats and hope his name gets him around, he physically shows us the power he has. He’s able to hold his own against our Lucifer, since he’s already killed his own.

This Michael is one step ahead and always thinking. There’s far more intrigue than we had in Season 5 and it’s going to keep me focus on the Lucifer/Michael storyline moving forward. And I find myself at a loss of who I want to see win. Lucifer or Michael?

He showed us this in less than 10 minutes of screen time. Just what can he do with a full season? Hint, SPN writers: he better be in a lot more episodes!
