Sam Winchester saves a girl from a violent spirit in Supernatural season 1, episode 19.

Provenance was a huge turning point for Sam Winchester in Supernatural season 1. While he started to feel more comfortable moving on from Jess in Hook Man, he didn’t allow himself to actually do that until Episode 19. One of the best things was, Dean fully supported Sam in pursuing the relationship with Sarah Blake.

For those who can’t remember much about the storyline, here’s your Supernatural season 1, episode 19 recap.

The Winchesters find a case

As with almost all other early episodes, the Winchesters are pulled into a case with strange deaths. Anne and Mark Telesca were killed in their home. However, the home was locked from the inside and there were no signs of forced entry. To make matters worse, this is just the latest death in a series of them from around the same area.

When the Winchesters don’t pick up on any signs of supernatural activity, they’re alerted to an auction house where the Telesca’s belongings have been sent. Owner Daniel Blake is not happy to see the Winchesters, considering their lack of style and dress, but Sarah Blake is a little more open to talking to them.

Dean notices that Sarah was interested in Sam, so convinces Sam to take her out on the date for more information. They hit it off after some initial awkwardness from Sam, which helps the Winchesters get details of the provenances of the Telesca items.

The Winchesters burn a painting

When Dean realizes that there’s a painting of Isaiah Merchant’s family from 1910 within the provenances, the Winchesters take a trip to the auction house to burn it. It seems like the job is over, but the next morning the Winchesters realized that the painting has been restored.

This leads to some research into the Merchant family. Isaiah had been accused of murdering his wife, sons, and adopted daughter. Sam also notices that the portrait has changed over the years. Isaiah is supposed to look straight ahead, but he’s not looking to the right of the portrait, towards his daughter.

Sam uncomfortably uses his connection with Sarah to see the portrait again. However, it’s already been sold onto another person. By the time the Winchesters and Sarah get to the house, the new owner has already been killed. Sam has no choice but to tell Sarah the truth about the portrait and the supernatural.

It’s then that the Winchesters and Sarah realize that more of the portrait has changed over the years. They also see there’s a mausoleum within the portrait, so they track it down to find Isaiah’s body. While all the family have been cremated and interred in the mausoleum, Isaiah was given a pauper’s funeral outside. There are bones to salt and burn.

The father was protecting the family

When the Winchesters and Sarah go back to burn the painting as a precaution, Sam and Sarah find themselves trapped in the house. It wasn’t Isaiah after all. He was trying to protect the family from his evil adopted daughter, Melanie.

Dean has to get to the mausoleum and hope that burning an antique doll with some of Melanie’s hair will help to get rid of the spirit. It works and the case is closed.

In the end, Sarah orders the burning of the portrait, just in case, and then kisses Sam goodbye. The Winchesters leave believing it will be the last they will see of Sarah.
