The finances of Supernatural’s Winchester Brothers

Ever since season 1, The Winchesters have been traveling the country, hunting things and staying in cheap motels. But how do they pay for all of it?

Since day one of Supernatural, Sam and Dean have been traveling the country, hunting supernatural creatures. As they travel the country, they eat in cheap diners and stay in cheap motels. Until Season 13. Has anyone else noticed that this season, the hotel rooms the Winchesters have been staying in are a lot fancier? Instead of fleabag motels, the brothers have been staying in hotels with free breakfasts and rooms that have multiple rooms.

How do they afford it? What has changed? In the past, they made their money through hustling pool and credit card scams. Are they still doing that now? Last month I posed the question on Twitter, asking for theories on how the Winchesters are making their money now. Let’s look at some of those theories.

More from Supernatural

Permanent location

My personal theory is that ever since they found the Men of Letter’s bunker and turned it into their permanent home, they haven’t needed to spend as much money as they used to. Therefore, when they do need to stay in a hotel, they can afford to splurge a little bit on a nice one.

Before, they were nomadic. They needed to stay in a motel nearly every night. So, they needed to make the money that they conned stretch.  Now that they are spending most of their time in the bunker and only staying in motels when they’re on a job, they can afford to stay in places with suites and free breakfasts.

Same old, same old

One theory that came to me on Twitter is that The Winchesters are still just getting their money the same way. Hustling pool and running credit card scams. They just might be being a little more successful at it. This makes sense. The boys can’t really hold a real job and they need money to eat and drive. The fact that they’re able to stay in nicer hotels might mean that they’ve gotten really good at hustling and they can now afford to stay in nicer places.

Men of Letters resources

Another popular theory I received from my Twitter inquiry was that the bunker came with its own resources. In addition to the bunker being a permanent location for the boys to stay, maybe the bunker had some hidden money in it. Perhaps when the brothers were searching it as they moved in, they found a safe. Or they found some information to stocks or bank accounts that the Men of Letters had access to, that sat and earned interest for the years after Abaddon wiped them out.

And now, Sam and Dean have access to all these financial resources, along with not needing to stay in motels every night. Now, they don’t need to hustle and con their way into earning money to live. They can just use the Men of Letters money.
