While Supernatural season 13 has been on point with throwbacks, there are things missing from the series.

Supernatural has always been a show about family. That remains the same and Season 13 has seen that family grow. The spin-off, Wayward Sisters, continues the idea that family don’t end with blood, while Jack has made a point in choosing his family. However, the show is still missing something that has made it spark in the past.

Here’s a look at the four things Supernatural Season 13 is missing right now. There’s hope that some of this will change.

More from Supernatural

A clear big bad of the season

Since the beginning, there has always been a big bad. Even though the first season’s big bad wasn’t overly clear, it was there. Azazel was the thing hunted, while the Winchester brothers searched for their father.

Each year the big bad has changed. Lucifer has taken the title numerous times, while Castiel and Amara have been big bads with twists. Even Season 12 had the clear big bads: Lucifer and the British Men of Letters.

Season 13 was supposed to set the big bads up as Michael and Asmodeus. At least, that’s the way things seem. Yet, they’re not clear big bads just yet. Michael wants to be a god in the Paradise World, but is currently still stuck in the Apocalypse World, so he’s not a major threat. Asmodeus hasn’t really shown fans what he can do and is more focused on getting the Shedim out than anything else.

There is still time, but usually by this point of the series the big bad is known.

The original humor

There have been maybe two episodes with humor in all nine episodes aired so far. Supernatural Season 13 has been dark, but not in the way that it should be. There’s been a lot of focus on the loss of Dean’s faith and the struggle now that Mary is trapped in another world.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, although the focus has been somewhat one-sided. Apart from an outburst, Sam has been mostly forgotten about; living his life as he always has. Dean’s depression was developed more, although now seems to have been forgotten about since Cass came back, which is unrealistic.

There needs to be a few more humorous, standalone episodes. Just now and then we need reminding of the comedic geniuses of the actors.

Urban legends and horror

Okay, so these have been missing for a few years. “Advanced Thanatology” is one of the first times the show has gotten back to its roots in terms of horror and creep-factor. It was dark, thrilling and twisty. These types of episodes were the norm for the show and they’re sadly missed by anything.

As Supernatural brings more of the older themes back and has throwbacks to times gone by, it’s time to bring back more of the legends and horror. Christine Griffin has shared some of the legends and lore she’d like to see. There are so many other opportunities!

Strong demons

Quite honestly, demons are weak, which is something else Griffin shared. “The Scorpion and the Frog” reminded fans of how powerful demons could be, but didn’t quite hit the mark. Gone are the days when a fight with a demon would leave everyone bloody, including some angels. Gone are the days when fans would wonder how the Winchesters would get out of situations.

Now, demons have angel blades and use them every time. They’re killed instantly, taking some of the “oomph” out of the creatures. It’s time to make them scary and tougher again. Give fans a reason to fear the moment a demon shows up on the screen!

Asmodeus should be one of the most terrifying demons on set, and he’s bland. Fans have even taken to giving him the nickname “the KFC demon” or “Evil Colonel Sanders.” He should be on par with Azazel.

Supernatural Season 13 is a strong season. It’s far stronger than its previous season and some of the questionable years shortly post-Kripke era. However, some tweaks are needed. After all, no season is perfect, right?
