Dragon Ball Super coming to an end. How will it all go down?

Just when Dragon Ball Super started turning up the heat, the series is reportedly coming to an end.

Not long ago, a tweet from the Dragon Ball Super Twitter page revealed that the series would be ending immediately following the Universal Survival Arc’s conclusion. Todd Blankenship, a trusted source for Dragon Ball related information translated the tweet, providing us with the sad revelation. Check it out below:

As you can see, Dragon Ball Super will conclude after the Universal Survival Arc ends in March. An untitled movie will be released this following December but for now, we should focus on the plot of Super.

While we don’t have any clues as to how the series will close up shop, Universe 7’s erasure is a distinct possibility. Even though Universe 7 is home to Goku and the main cast of Dragon Ball Super, deleting them from existence seems like a fitting way to end the series. Although, a more satisfying end could be at hand.

Reasonably speaking, no one expects Goku’s team to lose the current tournament. Their universe contains all the mainstays of the Dragon Ball world so it wouldn’t make sense for Universe 7 to lose, vanishing in the process. Unless the next installment does follow Jiren and Universe 11, Goku’s universe has a better chance at surviving and getting back to their world. Of course, that would mean the current saga will conclude on an open-ended note; the upcoming movie being evidence of this.

Assuming Dragon Ball Super does end with Universe 7 surviving the current tournament, their story could pick up again in the Untitled Dragon Ball movie; Dragon Ball Super has set a precedent for this taking place.

For those who don’t recall, Dragon Ball Super was spun off of the Resurrection of Frieza movie. So a new movie could serve the same purpose. The question is, what direction would a new series go in?

Could a new Dragon Ball series be in development? If so, where would the plot go?

Personally, I’d like to see a new Dragon Ball series shift focus on to someone like Gohan. He was one of the most influential figures in Dragon Ball Z but got left to the wayside in Super. And to be perfectly honest, Gohan would make for a better lead than Goku. He possess the characteristics of a worthy hero and doesn’t place his own needs before others.

In comparison to his father, Gohan won’t risk the safety of the world for a chance at increasing his power level. Goku on the other hand, is more than willing to put the entire universe’s safety at risk just for the chance to become stronger. With that known, Gohan would be ideal to head up a new series. He even has a family that could complete the rest of the cast. I mean, if characters like Goku and Vegeta are phased out for younger ones, Gohan’s family would probably join him. Although, that may just be wishful thinking.

In any case, a new Dragon Ball series would probably utilize one of the supporting characters of Dragon Ball Super. It obviously won’t be Beerus or Whis, but I could definitely picture an older Gohan, Goten, or Trunks taking the lead in said series. So if something like that is in development, the series would probably consist of a plot similar to Dragon Ball GT. Or who knows, perhaps the following Dragon Ball series will take a cue from GT and send the Z-warriors slightly forward into the future. Though, that’s still to be determined.

Dragon Ball Super airs Saturdays on Funimation. The series will conclude at the end of March.
