Freeform is teaming up with Marvel for their upcoming drama, Cloak & Dagger. Find out when the new series is set to premiere!

Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger has been in development for quite some time. Seven years to be exact. Once ABC Family rebranded to Freeform, the Marvel series started to move along quickly. Freeform ordered the series straight to series back in 2016 and filming began early last year. After releasing the first trailer footage in last Spring, fans now have an official premiere date to look forward. Freeform has confirmed the June 7 premiere date with a new sneak peek teaser.

Who are Cloak and Dagger?

Cloak & Dagger follows two very different teenagers from New Orleans who form a relationship after acquiring superpowers. Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) both have complicated lives and these newfound powers just add to the complication. The sneak peek shows the duo meeting for the first time at a party. At first it seems the encounter is flirtatious but Tyrone realizes Tandy stole his wallet. He chases her down until the two touch hands and experience their powers for the first time. Tandy will eventually become Dagger due to her ability to produce light daggers. Tyrone will identify as Cloak for his power to engulf people in darkness. Differences aside, the pair realize their abilities are more powerful when used together.

The characters of Cloak and Dagger first made their appearance in 1982 in an issue of Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man. Since then the duo have partnered up with teams such as the X-Men, Secret Avengers, Runaways, and New Warriors. After the two are injected with a synthetic drug, they form superhero abilities. The powers in the comics seem to be similarly represented in the TV show. In the case of the comics, Cloak and Dagger team up as vigilantes, fighting a war on crime. Where will these newfound powers take their TV counterparts?

There is no surprise regarding why Freeform would want to get into the superhero craze. Marvel has found success on multiple networks but this will be the first for Freeform. When the network rebranded, they set out to acquire a more diverse lineup of programs. Even though this is a teenage-based drama, the upcoming series should appeal to a wider range of demographics. Freeform has been attracting viewers well into adulthood with their recent programming. You also don’t need to be a superhero or Marvel fanatic to enjoy a drama like Cloak & Dagger. Sure, the power couple has a long history in the comics but there are no prerequisites in wanting to watch the series.

It will be interesting to see how Cloak & Dagger performs on Freeform especially seeing how well Marvel’s Runaways performed on Hulu. The two series are somewhat similar in focusing on teenagers with superpowers banning together. Even though both series exist in the MCU, there are no plans for any kind of crossovers. Freeform recently scrapped plans to house Marvel’s New Warriors, a series about teenage superhero with a more comedic tone. The series was well into development at the time of Freeform’s decision so the series is being shopped around. It seems possible that the New Warriors tone and format were no longer a fit for Freeform. The network also has a pretty impressive lineup this year so they may not have room for the series.

Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger will air Thursday June 7, 2018 at 8/7c with a 2-hour premiere on Freeform!
