The 21st century is currently brimming with ’80s nostalgia, and Stranger Things has been a prime propagator of that. While some movies and TV shows have tried to do the same and failed, Stranger Things has managed to appease critics and fans, thanks to Matt and Ross Duffer’s directorial supervision and heart-warming performances by its talented cast. As the show is about to return to Hawkins with season 3, executive producer Shawn Levy has revealed some exciting details.
The first season of the show focused on the revelation of the Upside Down, while the second season explored its extent by upping the scale and horror. Although both seasons had Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Hopper (David Harbour), Steve (Joe Keery), Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) and Joyce (Winona Ryder) facing multiple forms of danger, Noah Schnapp’s Will had to do a lot of the heavy lifting, especially in season 2.
In a recent interview with Glamour, Levy shared that despite the introduction of a new antagonist, Will won’t be the only one to bear the brunt of season 3’s perils.
"“We’re going to give Will a break. We’re not going to put Will through hell for a third season in a row. He’ll be dealing with stuff, but he won’t be at rock bottom the way we forced the amazing Noah Schnapp to play. We’re [going to be] dealing with forces of evil that are new.”"
The Upside Down is a place that is the polar opposite of Hawkins and a breeding ground for all kinds of trouble. However, it was dormant until Eleven made contact with the Demogorgon, who promptly made the town its private restaurant. So, although she has made amends by closing the breach and trapping the Shadow Monster, Levy’s comments mean Netflix’s version of the Losers’ Club won’t be enjoying their monster-free stint for long.
What might be the new evil of Stranger Things season 3?
Season 1 of Stranger Things began with the abduction of Will Byers by an inter-dimensional monster nicknamed the Demogorgon. Things only went south from there as we saw that not only did the beast had a lust for human blood, but also used them as incubators for its young-lings. However, it wasn’t until season 2 that we got to know that Will’s time at the Upside Down had made him vulnerable to the Shadow Monster, since it could use him as a spy and time its attacks on Hawkins with utmost precision.
While Will and the Shadow Monster’s connection was weak in the beginning, it completely possessed him by attacking him at Hawkins Middle School’s playground. But once Hopper and the rest of the gang understood this supernatural link, they took Will out to Hopper’s hut and performed one of the most nail-biting exorcisms of all time.
When Eleven shut down the doorway between the Upside Down and Hawkins, we learnt that the Demodogs possibly drew power from the Shadow Monster and functioned only when that doorway was open. However, the black mist that had invaded Will’s body didn’t die out in a similar way. Considering how it has the power to posses somebody and since Levy had hinted at it, it’s likely that the entity will try to enter someone else and regain its connection with the Shadow Monster.
"“We definitely see when Will is saved those particles, that particulate — we used to call it the particulate of evil — it emerged not in the Upside Down but in our world. and maybe that’s got to be dealt with”"

Season 2 was indeed a worthy successor to season 1 as it furthered the mystery of Hawkins and increased the stakes. But since both seasons have created a plethora of lovable characters, it’ll be hard to see any of them get possessed by this evil particulate. As Stranger Things is about to begin filming, after winning big at the Golden Globes, fans have to wait a little more to see who will turn out to become Hawkins’ next worst nightmare.
