With Sam and Dean back from “The Bad Place” they get stuck straight into the fight by lending Sherriff Donna a hand.

I was certainly happy to hear that Sherriff Donna would be back in tonight’s Supernatural episode. I love a lot of things about her character and I certainly enjoy the moments between her, Sam and Dean.

But by the end of this episode, I had nothing but sadness for both her and our lovable Sammy who, after coming close to losing his heart, has jumped into that bleak dark hole that Dean has just climbed out of.

Donna calls Sam and Dean for help

When Wendy has to fill up her car, her card is declined and she needs to go into the gas station to pay. That gives the bad guy of the night time to mess with her car. Once on the road, it’s not long before she has to pull over with a flat, due to something sticking out of her tire. Of course, that leads to her being kidnapped but she definitely puts up a fight.

That fight leads to Donna calling in the Calvary. As Jody has her hands full with the girls, she really wants the Winchesters’ helps. It may not be one of their cases, but she needs support from experienced people.

The FBI already has a man there, so Dean has to bluff his way through as Wendy’s cousin. Doug is there and shocked that Dean and Donna are related. The topic is quickly passed over, as everyone listens to the man from the FBI, who is sure this is the work of a serial killer known as The Butterfly. The killer has been around for 12 years and none of the victims have ever been found.

However, there’s a possible suspect; a pastor with a record. The pastor had one of Wendy’s shirts in his van and was at the truck stop.  When Sam and the FBI man get nowhere, Donna tries. It doesn’t take Donna too long to make the pastor breakdown. It’s clear this pastor has been framed.

An old John Winchester trick is used

Meanwhile, Dean gets some answers through the radio; something only truckers now use. It’s an old way John Winchester got news and does bring up some answers. A trucker had seen Wendy the night she was taken. The trucker also left Wendy at the roadside and now feels guilty for her actions.

Dean decides to make a call to Doug to get everything about the truck stop and any crimes. There’s nothing that jumps out as a hideaway for a serial killer. While they discuss the situation, Doug admits that he’s sure Donna is hiding something from him, a clear hint Doug will eventually learn the truth.

After the chat, they come across the window washer Wendy had run into the night she went missing. He shares that the cashier had shut shop early after Wendy left.

Sure enough, the cashier knows something. He shows Dean and Doug a website that is eBay for monsters. Different monsters bid on the body parts of humans. The cashier just sends the details of those he believes nobody will miss that will make good purchases and then gets paid.

Sam and Donna are called in and instantly disgusted at the site. It’s not possible to track the location, though. It’s not just encrypted, but encrypted dark web and that would take days to encrypt. They need FBI technology.

Of course, it was him all along

It doesn’t take long for the FBI man to come back with an address, which is most certainly fishy. Dark web isn’t that easily broken, even by the FBI. A look at the hassle Grey’s Anatomy has had with the bitcoin hackers is enough to know that. So, it really shouldn’t be that surprising when the FBI guy shows up at the site and knocks Sam out.

It also shouldn’t be that surprising that the address was a decoy or that the cashier is also a monster; a vampire to be exact. While Dean and Donna head through the address, the vampire attacks and turns Doug. Luckily, the vampire is still around, so Dean is able to make the cure and also get the real address. Donna is able to save both Doug and Wendy in one episode.

The Value of Sam’s Heart

At the previously unknown location, the FBI guy has got Sam tied down and on camera. It’s time to auction off his parts, in particular, his heart. Monsters are willing to pay a whopping $500k for the heart of Sam Winchester, but they’re not going to get it. Just as it looks like the FBI guy is going to shoot Sam in the head, Dean steps in and saves the day.

Poor Doug isn’t dealing well with the monsters. As Dean asks if they’ll have another good guy on their side, Doug decides against it. He can’t live that type of life and can’t be with Donna because of it. Rather than ask Donna to step away from hunting, he apologizes and walks away.

Sam makes a point that everyone in the life gets hurt or worse, so letting Doug go is safer. On the way home, Sam makes a point that everyone who knows them gets killed. Despite Dean believing Sam is in the dark place he was earlier in the season, Sam points out that he’s just telling the truth. It all ends bloody and bad for the Winchesters and there is no other way.
