Last night, Star Trek: Discovery finished its first season with a surprise for fans. In a brand-new interview, Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman weighs in on the big surprise of the season finale, and what it means for season 2!

If you have not seen the season finale of Star Trek: Discovery, please note that the following will contain SPOILERS for how the episode ends. If you have seen it, then please read on.

As Star Trek: Discovery came to a close Sunday night, the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery found themselves in the crosswires of a Federation ship signaling for assistance. After warping to its location, the crew found out who this ship belonged to.

Captain Pike of the U.S.S. Enterprise!

More from CBS

In terms of fanservice, this is the biggest move yet for the people behind the show. Nothing is known beyond this because the season just wrapped but details of casting for Captain Pike I’m sure will come very soon.

However, Variety was able to snag an interview with Alex Kurtzman, who currently serves as Executive Producer on Star Trek: Discovery. In his interview, he sheds light on the significance of having U.S.S. Enterprise in season 2, and how it fits into the canon of the franchise.

"“The show is called ‘Discovery.’ It’s not ‘Enterprise.’ So yes, the Enterprise will play a part of Season 2 but it will absolutely not overshadow Discovery. And I think with Enterprise’s arrival in the finale we recognize that the audience has a lot of questions about our synchronicity with the original series, which really means or synchronicity with canon. So the promise of the Enterprise holds the answers to a lot of those questions, including Spock’s relationship with his half-sister who he’s never mentioned. Which does not necessarily mean you’re going to see Spock, just that we owe an answer to that question.”"

This will certainly be an intriguing road map for season 2, especially with discovering how this all links to Spock and Captain Pike. Now that the show lost Captain Lorca, the appropriate substitute naturally would be Captain Pike. It’s a long shot but I’m hoping the amazing people of CBS can convince Bruce Greenwood to return to the role.

Star Trek: Discovery season 2 is not expected until 2019 but stay tuned at Hidden Remote for more details about the future of the show!
