Supernatural fans were confused when they first heard Sister Jo called Anael in Devil’s Bargain. Wasn’t that the name of another angel?

Many Supernatural fans took to Twitter in confusion after Devil’s Bargain. Sister Jo was called the angel Anael, but many are sure that name has already been mentioned. Cast your mind back to Season 4’s Anna. There is much speculation that she is actually the angel Anael, who fell from grace and became human; forgetting all about her angelic past.

The truth is Anna was never confirmed as Anael by the Supernatural writers or showrunners. Never once has her angel name been given. Julie McNiven, who played the Season 4 and 5 character, believed that her angelic name was Anael. Fans have also believed the same thing because of this.

Anael is also spelt Haniel in Jewish lore. She’s an archangel who inspires harmony within love. However, it’s clear that while Anna was high up, she wasn’t an archangel. Many wonder whether Anna was actually Ananiel, a fallen angel from the Book of Enoch. That would certainly match Anna’s storyline.

Of course, Haniel doesn’t match Sister Jo’s storyline. Sister Jo’s Anael was called a button pusher in Heaven. Of course, this could have been a cover story to help get her own way with Lucifer. She is a smart business woman after all!

The use of the name Anael is unlikely inconsistency on part of the writers. Eric Kripke never told fans who Anna really was in Heaven, never giving up her real angelic name. It’s just always been fan and actor suspicion. Sister Jo’s Anael is now official canon for Supernatural Season 13.

Of course, the use of Anael with Danneel Ackles playing Sister Jo has certainly brought up a lot of questions. Is it just coincidence that a red-head was cast for both Sister Jo and Anna? Is there something bigger going on with the amount of familiar faces returning? Could Sister Jo have made up this backstory to make people forget she was once the fallen angel who had sex with Dean Winchester in the Impala?
