A new report from THR has come out that Jay Hernandez will star in the new television reboot of Magnum P.I. The actor will take on the famous role that was originally brought to life by Tom Selleck. The report also suggests that Hernandez will bring a mustache to the role, but no word on if it will be as magnificent as Tom Selleck’s.
The new series is being developed by CBS and has writer Peter Lenkov of Hawaii Five-0 scripting. The pilot is expected to shoot in Hawaii, with Justin Lin (Fast Five, Star Trek Beyond) directing, which should give viewers a good idea what the feel of this show will be.
This is a fascinating turn for Hernandez who is fresh off of projects such as Bright and Gangster Squad. I have trouble seeing him play the same role as Tom Selleck, but anything is possible. He sure has a challenge ahead of him though if he wants to compete with that mustache. That said, the show has a lot of promising talent, and with Justin Lin directing the pilot, this should be a fun episode to watch.
The original series had Tom Selleck play Thomas Magnum who was a Navy Seal turned private investigator that used his skills and charm to take down people over seven seasons. To get an idea of what the show was like at the time, check out the opening credits of the 1980s Magnum PI below:
