This February, the Marvel Collector Corps dedicated the month to Marvel’s animal-esque heroes and villains with the monthly theme of Do Not Feed the Animals, but how did it stand up to past boxes?

After a disappointing end of 2017 with a less than stellar box dedicated to The Hulk, Marvel Collector Corps aimed to rebound with its first box of 2018. Much to the surprise of many collectors, Marvel Collector Corps opted not to deliver a box dedicated to Marvel’s latest cinematic release, Black Pantherbut rather celebrate Marvel’s greatest animal-esque heroes and villains under the theme of Do Not Feed the Animals.

With so many heroes and villains to choose from, Funko had plenty of options to turn to in putting together this month’s box so how exactly did it stack up against past boxes and which characters made their way into the box? Join us now as we take a look at the month’s various offerings before weighing in with our final verdict on the box’s goodies.

Warning: The following post contains spoilers pertaining to the contents of the Marvel Collector Corps’ February box. If you have not yet received your February box and wish to avoid any spoilers, proceed at your own risk!

I’ll be honest, the thought of featuring Howard the Duck in this month’s box somehow never occurred to me – which is why I was so pleasantly surprised  by the month’s t-shirt. It’s a fun design that stands out from past Marvel Collector Corps t-shirts and is one that fans are sure to appreciate.

Given his rising popularity thanks to the success of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise films, it seemed only fitting that Rocket Racoon make his way into this month’s box.

What was nice to see is that Funko found a unique way to incorporate the character via the Pop! Pen and Notepad which provide subscribers with two items they can’t get anywhere else and adds variety to the already lengthy list of Rocket-themed merchandise produced by Funko and other pop culture brands.

From the moment the February theme was announced, I had a sneaking suspicion that Squirrel Girl would pop up somewhere in the month’s box but I wasn’t sure how. While I was happy that my gut was correct, I would have much rather preferred to see the character featured via a more unique method than the box’s patch.

It might have taken longer than most Spider-Man fan would have liked, but the wait of getting our first Rhino Pop! was well worth it. Funko knocked it out the park with this month’s Pop! which beautifully captured the character’s iconic look. This is a figure fans who missed the month’s box are going to be seeking out and it’s sure to go down as one of the Marvel Collector Corps’ better Pop! figures!

Finally, the item we all have been waiting for: the month’s Black Panther offering! Like many fans, I too was disappointed in Funko’s decision not to dedicate the February Marvel Collector Corps box to Black Panther and was hoping that the month’s Black Panther item would somewhat make up for it. While I would have loved an entire box of Black Panther goodies, I’ll happily settle for this Black Panther Wobbler which is a great addition to the Marvel line and does a great job at incorporating each intricate detail of the character’s iconic look.

More from Entertainment

Each new Marvel Collector Corps box promises to provide subscribers with a box filled with $50 worth of exclusive, high-quality Marvel and Funko collectible products. With this in mind, let’s take a quick look at the estimated retail value of each of this month’s items:

  • Howard the Duck T-Shirt: $15-$25
  • Rocket Racoon Pop! Pen & Notepad: $7-$10
  • Squirrel Girl Patch: $5-$7
  • Rhino Pop! Figure: $15-$20
  • Black Panther Wobbler: $15-$25

Looking at the month’s offerings as a whole, the February Marvel Collectors Corp box proved to be a strong offering but failed to attain the success of past boxes. While there was no true “miss” within the month, it lacked that wow factor we’ve seen in past boxes and seemed like a safe way to touch on some stray characters.

It was nice to see a Wobbler make its way into the service and bringing fans a Black Panther Wobbler was a great way to bring a unique, one-of-a-kind Black Panther offering to the table. However, one has to believe that this month’s box would have been a much larger success if Funko had followed tradition and dedicated the entire box to Black Panther merchandise. Given the film’s success, the latest Marvel cinematic offering and its beloved characters would have helped to put the month over the top rather than a box which failed to wow.
