Are prophets no more on Supernatural after what Castiel did?

This post is based on Episode 14, Season 13 of Supernatural, “Good Intentions.” If you have not watched the episode then SPOILER WARNING. If you wish for no spoilers then take the moment to go back now. If you do read on then don’t complain about spoilers.

“Good Intentions” was an episode that had two mini-storylines going on within the episode. Jack and Mary in the AU; Sam, Dean and Cas in the normal world. Both stories linked to each other but with their own individual problems. Jack and Mary, evading Michael and his psychotic Angel douche bags and Sam, Dean and Cas, an unhinged Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.

Donatello the prophet is that unhinged Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Thanks to Amara (The Darkness) eating his sole, Donatello became infected by what he is reading on the Demon Tablet. It sent him down a dark path that involved trying to kill Sam, Dean and Cas.

The plan failed, obviously, and it led to Donatello begin locked on up in The Men of Letters bunker. Unsure of what they could do to help him, and in vital need of the information locked in his head, Castiel decided to extract it by force, leaving Donatello brain dead and breathing off a ventilator.

The debate on whether Cas did right or wrong in this instance is for another day. What we need to look at just now is if this is the end of the Supernatural prophets?

Is this the end of the Supernatural prophets?

As the lore goes, when one prophet dies, another emerges. Like in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, hen a Slayer dies another comes to light. Basically, there is a big queue of prophets waiting and the only way you move up the queue is when the “The Prophet” at the front dies.

Donatello is technically not dead though. He is hooked up to a bunch of machines in a hospital and unless they are switched off he will remain alive. So will this means that no new prophet will emerge?

If this is the case, what will Sam and Dean do when they need a prophet? Would they go and switch the machines off in order to satisfy their own needs? That doesn’t sound like the Sam and Dean I know.

It’s an interesting fork in the road that Supernatural has reached. On one hand, no new prophet could put Sam and Dean at a disadvantage in the future. Leading them to potentially have to deal with switching off Donatello’s life support. Whereas on the other hand, if a prophet just emerges they put the whole question of how prophets up in the air.
