Netflix released the long-awaited second season of Jessica Jones on Thursday, March 8, and some things are still the same! Jessica continues to drink pretty much all the time. And when she’s not drinking at a bar or straight from the bottle at home, she’s chugging a Red Bull (or chomping on a Slim Jim).
Despite all this, Jessica is still seemingly healthy, strong, and sharp. Due to her superpowers, she probably has a fast metabolism along with a very powerful liver. But how unhealthy would it all be for the average person?
While I definitely understand wanting to pick up Jessica’s badassery, her diet of Red Bull for breakfast, whiskey for lunch, dinner, and in between meals, is not something you want to take on.
I spoke with ER nurse Jenny Samuel at Baylor Sunynyvale to tell us exactly how much damage we would be doing to our bodies. “Energy drinks, such as Red Bull, are considered uppers, or stimulants, while alcohol like whiskey is a downer, depressant. Taking both in combination can give off the same effect as being on cocaine. And it’s very easy to overdose,” Samuel says.
Samuel went on to add that excessively drinking Red Bull and whiskey can lead to long-term neuromuscular disability. Too much alcohol without proper food (and no, Slim Jims don’t count) can deplete your body of nutrients and clean your intestines from the magnesium in your body. This causes an unbalanced PH level in the body, making you go into an altered mental status because of metabolic acidosis and could result in Wernicke’s-korsakoff’s syndrome, which eventually leads to death if not treated.

Whoa. We’re so glad Jessica has superhuman abilities, but maybe she should cut back a bit, just to be safe. Stay hydrated, everyone!
