Netflix’s Nailed It is all of us just doing the best we can
By Jason Hall
The new Netflix series, Nailed It, is a great example of how a reality show about ordinary people can be funny without being cruel.
We have seen the baking and cooking shows about amazingly talented people and the dishes they can pull off in no time at all. Nailed It is about something else.
This series is about everyone in the world who might not even know how to bake a cake. They bring in average people who have little to no real cooking experience and they give them unreachable challenges to try and match the efforts of the masters.
In every episode, the contestants are challenged to reproduce a piece of baking by the most talented professionals.
More from Netflix
- Bridgerton season 3: All the details to know about Penelope and Colin’s love story
- It’s a slow week on Netflix with only three new releases (Nov. 20)
- Exploding Kittens: From card game to Netflix animated series starring Tom Ellis
- The Crown and more Netflix shows and movies to stream this week (November 13)
- Escaping Twin Flames and more harrowing love-centered documentaries to watch on Netflix
The most important aspect of the series is its sense of humor, led by adorable host Nicole Byer. Everyone is setting their expectations low and no one should go away disappointed. This is all about each contestant just trying their best and hopefully learning something along the way. When they inevitably fail and create a dessert that is undoubtedly hard to look at, everyone can laugh together as opposed to everyone else laughing at the contestants.

There has always been a glut of bad-natured reality shows out there that mock the common people and find their entertainment at the expense of their subjects. Nailed It is a delight to watch and we can joyfully laugh at the efforts of these amateur chefs. Sadly, there are only 6 episodes up right now, but the good news is you can binge the whole series in basically one evening. If you’re like me, you’ll be ready for more as soon as its over.
