Before the Winchesters can learn the truth about the demonic possession, they have to track down Sam’s steps. Sam has a key to a storage unit, which has a stolen car inside. It’s like the woman who swallowed the fly. Inside the car is a bloody knife…
With this seemingly dead end for now, the Winchesters follow other clues that lead to a gas station. An employee fearfully demands that Sam leaves, after the chain-smoking and beer-downing he’d done before. This doesn’t sound like Sam at all, but they manage to follow other clues to the house of a hunter, Steve
Wandell. Steve is dead, but there’s security footage.
Who killed the hunter? Sam.

Dean is completely thrown off by this. Well, so is Sam, because he doesn’t remember doing it. If he’s turning evil, he needs Dean to promise him to kill him. Of course, Dean doesn’t want to ever do that, so in return, Sam knocks out his brother and takes off again.
Dean tracks down Sam to a friend
After getting help from the hotel staff, Dean is able to track Sam’s phone to Duluth, Minnesota. Dean realizes everything that Sam is doing and knows that Jo is there. Before Dean can get to Jo, though, Sam is already there and has tied Jo to a pillar.
Sam reveals that John had put Bill out of his misery by shooting him in the head. It’s not a way to get on Jo’s good side, and just as it looks like he’ll kill her, Dean rushes in.
As an argument starts, Dean starts throwing holy water at Sam. Sure enough, it burns and reveals Sam was possessed by a demon. The Winchesters get into a fight, which leads to Dean getting shot and falling into the water. Sam believes Dean is dead, so takes off for his next victim.
Fortunately, the victim isn’t Jo. She’s able to find Dean and quickly fixes up the bullet to his shoulder. With a quick goodbye and an empty promise, Dean rushes off to find his brother, knowing where he’ll go next.
Bobby is smarter than anyone thinks
Never underestimate Bobby Singer. He’s the next on Sam’s hit list, and Boby instantly lets the younger Winchester in. They even have a beer together, only for Sam to start coughing with smoke coming out of his mouth. Bobby put holy water in the beer.
"“Don’t try to con a con man.”"
By the time Sam wakes up from his unconscious state, he’s in a devil’s trap and Dean is already there. Bobby starts to exorcize the demon, but there’s a problem. There’s a binding link on Sam’s arm, locking the demon in place.
The two do figure out which demon is possessing him: Meg. She’s back for revenge and she has a few tricks up her sleeve. One of those is to crack the devil’s trap, so she can get free. As a fight breaks out, Bobby is able to grab Sam’s arm and burn the mark. Meg decides to come out of Sam’s body and escapes through the fireplace.
In the end, Bobby gets word that Steve Wandell has been killed and his hunter friends are looking for the person who did it. The Winchesters need to keep their mouths shut about it. Bobby also passes them amulets to wear to protect them from being possessed again.
When back on the road, Dean makes a promise to Sam: he’s going to find a way to save him.
