Roseanne tackles the fashion industry and society’s view on it.

We hit another anchor point in Episode 2. As noticed by Dan in Episode 1 and his hopes that his grandson would somehow make his way to the boy’s clothes aisle at the local Target, it goes even deeper in this episode.

Becky is trying to make a good impression for Andrea, ccleaning house and begging her parents to at least pretend to be normal people. It obviously, doesn’t help that Dan uses his front yard as a bathroom depot waving to neighbors with his free hand. At one time, Roseanne was for this situation for Becky, but when she learns that Becky will be using her own eggs to provide Andrea and her husband with a child, she’s also against the plan.

Mark comes downstairs and is interested in knowing how he looks with a black skirt, black leggings, and bright purple glittery skirt to go with a plaid scarf and fringed boots. Dan takes one look and realizes the only way Mark is going to survive is with “fast shoes and a head start.” Darlene is indeed worried about how he will be treated at school, and so is Harris. She is now going to Lanford High School.

Dan relates his worries to Darlene, but she puts an end to it quickly. Saying she has it under control and has read the books. She understands that he needs to express himself and not get any labels from her or anyone else. Jackie then explains through her life coaching expertise that society has deemed what is important and we as people conform to that instead of being ourselves.

When time is decided who will take Mark to school, since Darlene needs to register Harris, Dan goes sprinting out of the kitchen and Roseanne volunteers. Before leaving, Roseanne has a need to know if Mark believes he is a boy or a girl. He answers quickly with “A boy.” Now she is confused and asks “Whats up with the girl’s clothes?” Mark with sincerity explains: “This is just me. I like colors that pop. It’s more creative.” He then tells his Granny Rose that it is important to him. This is all that Roseanne needs and has decided that the family will back him up.

When taking him to class, one of the students says to Mark “freak!” This does not go over well with her and she gets permission to talk to the class. She tells them all that they need to be nice to him, or she will know because she is a “white witch.”

Darlene has to bring Mark home. He was caught with a pocket knife She finds out that Dan has given him the knife and she is not too happy about it. Dan explains that he gave it to him because he liked it. Mark’s reason is that someone was going to hurt him, and instead of taking a beating he gave it to the bully to back off.

Mark is hurt that nobody wants to play with him. Darlene tells him to stick in there and kids will. He just needs to find the nerd crowd and bond with them. The following day, Mark is wearing another skirt with red and black plaid. Dan admires his courage and gives him a big hug before Mark leaves for school.

Notes:

  • DJ was not in this episode
  • Both Jackie and DJ’s storylines are seriously lacking.
  • The teacher that told Roseanne that Darlene barks like a dog was in this episode as Mark’s teacher
  • Best line. As Dan and the kids are playing basketball, Mark wearing his skirt climbs up on furniture to dunk the basketball and celebrates. Dan states: “Okay, he doesn’t have to wear pants, but he’s gotta wear underwear.”
  • Sarah Gilbert has been amazing and I am very pleased with Ames McNamara as Mark. He has shown emotionality and fortitude in just two episodes that is difficult to pull off for anyone his age.

Episode Rating: 4.0 out of five
