Despite not airing an Easter-themed episode, this week’s Bob’s Burgers episode shows us some competition, music and a little bit of heart.

Bob’s Burgers might not be celebrating Easter this year, but no need to fret. There’s still a new episode, keeping its post-Olympic streak alive. This week, we get a look at a Louise-centric episode while Gene and Linda team up again like last week. In a non-Easter episode on Easter, let’s hope it lives up to “Eggs For Days.”

If you haven’t watched “The Hurt Soccer,” there will be spoilers from this week’s Bob’s Burgers episode.

“The Hurt Soccer” starts off with the family working in the restaurant before getting a phone call from Louise’s soccer coach. The coach explains she needs to show up or the team will have to forfeit. Linda says Louise will show up and play. Bob and Linda thumb wrestle to find out who will take with Bob losing but Tina goes along.

Once they arrive, Bob gets roped into coaching the team. Tina agrees to be his assistant coach while the team warms up. The game starts with Louise’s team playing horribly before the other player talks trash to her. Instead of motivating her, she and the team end up playing even worse.

Bob and Louise decide to tank so they can get back to watch TV together. The game goes to halftime and Louise’s teammates talk about how sad they are. Louise has a change of heart and decides to start trying.

Bob tries to give them a pep talk, switching Louise to the goalie. She ends up being an awesome goalie because of her favorite TV show. The Gold Dragons take advantage of the Blue Dragon’s moment of weakness but still lose 21 to 1.

Back at the restaurant, Linda and Gene talk about their piano bar idea. The two sing with Teddy until Gene’s music teacher comes in. She plays and gets the restaurant grooving, talking about her involvement with the community musical. She explains that she’s there after she got fired from the theater’s production.

After finding out she’s sad, Gene and Linda work together to get her back on the show. Linda calls the theater and the cast comes back for her. Everyone but Shelia decides to apologize, resulting in the two arguing.

Linda tries to make things right and finds out Ms. Merkin and Shelia are sisters. They reunite and sing one last song in the restaurant until the grill catches on fire.

To say I had high expectations for this week would be an understatement. I was hoping the show would air an Easter-themed episode. Even though they didn’t, “The Hurt Soccer” was a surprising treat for Easter and April Fool’s Day.

This week was surprising especially in terms of plot. Louise’s plot involving Bob and Tina brought an interesting dynamic and showed us a new side of each character. Once again, we saw another moment of maturity for Louise. Despite being the youngest, she is showing some great character development this season.

As for the plot with Linda and Gene, it was understandably weaker. Thankfully, it added some humor and music to the episode. I do love seeing more of Linda and Gene’s relationship as those two almost never work together.

Overall, it was a unique yet still funny episode. Hopefully, they produce more sports-themed episodes. This episode might be in the running for my favorite of the season so far!

I give “The Hurt Soccer” an A-.

Bob’s Burgers airs Sundays at 7:30/6:30c.
