Legion returns in full force with its second season. David is back and everything is as weird as you’d expect.

“Do you have any waffles?”

The opening scene alone is great because we see Lenny and Oliver in this bright sunny place, just lounging in the pool. Lenny realizes they’re trapped and the screen goes black with only a narrator’s voice over. However, when we see David for the first time, he’s in a much darker, drearier place.

The show’s use of colors really makes certain scenes stand out. When David is taken to Division 3, aka HQ, everything is red. Later, David and Syd are reunited and we see them back in the all-white room we’ve seen previously in season one.

More from FX

Syd gets David and the viewers up to speed by telling him that he was gone for about a year. They also almost found Farouk, who is still using Oliver’s body. Farouk infects people and they just have their teeth chattering non-stop. We also find out that Dr. Bird hasn’t been working as of late.

The narrator returns with talk about delusions. During the narration, we’re introduced to Albert A. He thought his leg was no longer his own and decided to cut it off. Lenny then appears with an egg and the creature inside eats part of a little chick. It is exactly as odd as you’d expect it to be.

Clark has a brief chat with David and his main message is for David to go see the Admiral. What has to happen next is explained to David by the three machine women with mustaches. Something interesting that we learn here is that David can’t read their minds.

Cary has a solution to enhance David’s abilities, which requires him to get naked and float in water. Syd leaves because she can’t watch what they’re doing . This leads her to run into Ptonomy and he questions whether or not the Shadow King still has some control over David. He’s probably not the only one to have that thought, but it’s nice to hear someone say it in this episode.

In typical, weird fashion, Legion gives us a dance-off between David and Lenny and Oliver. This is one portion of the show that I’m not sure of. It seemingly didn’t serve much of a purpose (at least not yet) as David’s powers are being enhanced by Cary.

David and Syd have a cute moment when he gifts her a compass that will always point her in his direction. She’s understandably worried that he’ll leave again. Their relationship was already a unique one because of Syd’s powers, so they find creative ways to work around it.

Syd and David find themselves in a pitch black zone with no sounds. It turns into a game of Pictionary. It’s a clever way to have something communicated to him. The main message is for David to help Farouk find his body. With David talking out what she’s trying to tell him, we get a little glimpse into how his mind pieces things together. David keeps returning to the same club in this episode, too. First, we see the door, then there’s the dance-off and we see it a third time before the end of the episode.

Legion is a show that isn’t afraid to mess with your mind. This episode was wacky, confusing and wonderful all at the same time. Legion is the most ambitious X-Men property out there right now and it isn’t afraid to take risks. I couldn’t ask for anything more from this show and I can’t wait to see how it all pays off this season.

Legion airs Tuesday nights on FX.
