A Quiet Place premiered at Austin’s SXSW last month to incredibly positive feedback and reviews from audiences and critics. When you go catch this movie at the theater, you may notice several moviegoers communicating in sign language. Is the film so silent that deaf, mute, and hard of hearing movie fans can attend? Absolutely.
As you may already know, A Quiet Place follows a family of four who communicate with each other using sign language. Their surroundings appear post-apocalyptic and we quickly learn a tragedy took place not too long ago. Horrifying creatures have taken over the entire world. They’re fast, they’re ruthless, and if you’re not quiet, they’ll hunt you. These monsters are blind, but they possess extremely good hearing. Therefore, there is almost no dialogue throughout the entire film, only sign language.
Don’t worry too much if you don’t know any sign language though, captions appear at the bottom of the screen. Still, it’s always great to know a few signs, you never know when it could come in handy, and you’ll also understand a few scenes without the help of captions.
Below are four signs taken from four important scenes (not in order) in the movie. Note: Absolutely no spoilers are ahead.
Stop
This scene is very touching and full of emotion. We realize how difficult it is for deaf-mute people to express frustration. They can’t scream or quickly say what’s on their mind.
I love you
Prepare to cry in this scene. Bring tissues to the movie.
Loud
This is an obvious one and signed early in the movie.
Rocket
Another emotional scene. This is a very heartfelt movie.

Watch this movie as soon as you can to avoid spoilers! Just like Jordan Peele’s Get Out, seeing the movie in a dark room is part of the experience. The fears, emotions, and brilliant performances impact audiences the most via a large screen and with the volume loud.
A Quiet Place is in theaters April 6.
