Darlene and David take a closer look at their relationship, while Bev tries to move in with Roseanne.

We finally get to see Johnny Galecki (David). In his only appearance for the season, we were entertained by a great performance. The story was a spiritual rise with heart-wrenching conflict. Sarah Gilbert (Darlene) also gives us another winning portrayal.

David has come back to Lanford to be a father. He has been missing most of his children’s lives by joining forces with a charity to build houses in third-world countries. Being missing in action has led Darlene to snarkily name the group “Deadbeats Without Borders.”

In the meantime, Roseanne and Jackie’s mom has come to live. She has been dismissed from the retirement home, only because as she puts it, “Apparently, at my age, I’m not supposed to enjoy a healthy sex life. With multiple partners in multiple parts of the facility.”

We first see David trying to crawl into Darlene’s bedroom window. He knows that going to the front door could mean instant death by Dan. David tells Darlene that their road has come to a close and has met someone else in his travels. However, Darlene isn’t ready to give up and basically love attacks David.

In the morning, David breaks it down for his wife. He lets her know that after his brother had passed he couldn’t deal with life and needed to escape. Typical Darlene and David, it doesn’t take long before they begin to argue. Darlene realizes they are keeping old habits and quickly redirects them.

After some soul searching with Roseanne and Becky, Darlene has come to realize that their relationship will never work together. That they are best themselves apart. With that, the kids are better too.

Notes:

  • Great to see a little bit of D.J.’s daughter Mary.
  • No D.J. in this episode. No backstory.
  • I think Becky has a drinking problem. I think she agrees.
  • Becky and Darlene finally having a sisterly relationship.
  • Best Line: Roseanne tells David as he is leaving “I know you are a quality person David. I want you to prove me right.”

Rate: 5/5
